Dos Prime95

Does anyone know if it would be possible to make a dos prime95 or if it has already been done?

There is a REALLY old version available. Other than that you'd have to fiddle with the source code to compile it for DOS.

Where?

Where could you get this old version (for manual testing)?

Check this page. Note that what is available is v18 which does not include any optimizations for P4s or Athlons. It also does not include the latest error checking routines.

You can do manual testing (non-PrimeNet) with more recent versions.

v18 also cannot handle exponents above 20 million

Generally the best bet that I have heard brought up is to use a Linux "live" CD to boot from and keep the files on your hard disk. No need to install a new operating system on your comp.

If your computer is too old to run anything other than DOS, it's probably not worth running GIMPS software on anyway. My oldest computer that's participating is a Pentium 133 MHz. It's currently working on a trial factoring of M28507447, with an estimated run time of two months.

regards, Leif.

I could . . .

I could use it to factor, I just don't have any OS for it (except DOS).

It doesn't have a CD dirve . . .

Uncwilly 2005-02-21 18:21

There are linux distros that will run from a DOS partition.

Mystwalker 2005-02-21 20:07

Does the Linux/Memtest/Mprime disk work for this?
Or is it too much restricted to memory checking?

alpertron 2005-02-21 20:35

I think the Linux version should work on DOS if compiled with DJGPP.

moo 2005-02-21 21:48

...google menuet think thats how to spell it thing boots from a floppy... idk if p95 will work for it you could try that floppy that was floating around the forums for a bit

Unregistered 2005-02-22 22:41

I tried it, but the graphics arn't very good, and you have to load it from a floppy every time, and it runs slow.

moo 2005-02-23 01:24

yes but its small and has minimal requirements....

if you have another machine then i would susgest

I didn't know Prime95 was ported for it, and if it is where can I get it?

moo 2005-02-23 02:25

yes mprime its also in dl section

Unregistered 2005-02-23 21:53

Mabey I should rephrase my question. Where can I get a dos program that would LL test, not connect to gimps?

moo 2005-02-24 01:02

mprime can do that it runs in linux idk about dos there was a version that booted linux from a floopy and then ran a torture test.

alpertron 2005-02-24 12:24

I compiled MLucas version 2.8 using DJGPP 2.03.

I tested it with known Mersenne primes under DOS mode of Windows 95:

For n=2281 it produced a segmentation fault.
For n=23209 and n=110503 it shows a Res64 not zero, indicating that the number is not prime.

Unregistered 2005-02-24 23:40

I can't extract .gz files. Is there anywhere I cann get this zipped?

Mystwalker 2005-02-24 23:48

.gz are gzip files. On Windows systems, you can use 7-zip, for example.

alpertron 2005-02-25 11:57

I found that MLucas 2.8 shows the same wrong results in different computers when compiled with DJGPP.

It is possible that for some #ifdef the preprocessor takes the wrong path so the C compiler generates wrong code.

When the DJGPP compiler is running the __DJGPP__ constant is defined.
