I've emailed the user for his last save file and his results.txt file.

From the very limited information at this point, the report looks legitimate! The reported prime is larger than M#41 and is NOT ten million digits.

would it be possible to email me when the exponent is verified? I would like to get the story up on www.undergroundmath.com ASAP

The email can be send to news@undergroundmath.com

Pconfig 2005-02-19 14:18

Alright, how many digits does it have? Or is that to early to tell?
Alright, how many digits does it have? Or is that to early to tell?
Assuming it is 2^25964951-1

Using: http://www.apfloat.org/apfloat/mprintc5.zip

Assuming I did everything right, I get 7,816,230 digits... The file is here:

http://www.mersenneforum.org/txt/25964951.txt

However, I'm making a lot of assumptions here...

:innocent:

To find the number of digits in a Mersenne number, multiply the exponent by (base 10) log of 2, then round up to the nearest whole number.

Ah, ok
I didn't know the exponent :)

:ermm: Not to be a pest, but are there any updates on the status of this new prime?

Does it "look" real? When is verification expected to be completed?

Has this just been luck or have the number of participants increased enough to "justify" the increased frequency of primes being found?

Mystwalker 2005-02-24 19:50

The newest information is available in this thread.

Expected completion time is Friday night. The results.txt was sent and contained no error. Unfortunately, the prime95 version was too old so that the save file has been already deleted.

There is no reason to believe this is a false alarm. Verification should complete late Friday or early Saturday.

We have been on a lucky streak. From 3.1 million to 20 million we were unlucky. Now from 20 million to 30 million we are quite lucky.
