Whats so hard about it?

I'm starting to doubt its solvability. Basically, there's just no way to move the 2 and 3 out of the way. And 1 stubbornly clings to the top.

This is the closest that I can get.

I think it is solvable, I just haven't done it yet. I can get A to the other two corners and I can move 2 out of the way, but I am missing something to get it to that last corner.

It only takes 26 steps to get to the status you have achieved. Here are the steps:

A, 1, 2, 3, 6 moves in L shape, 3, 2, 6, A, 4, 5, 7, 8 moves in L shape, 7, 5, 8, A, 6 moves in L shape, 2, 3, A, 8, 4, 6, 1

See if these steps help out any:

I went through that sequence before, but I thought I was farther from the solution because A is farther from its target position.

Hmm, there are several typos there. In any case, it seems that once A touches the right side, everything is stuck.
