Main Computer Dead

My main computer just died. Status.htm and top*.htm won't be updated until I get it repaired.

Hopefully the CPU is not fried. I found the computer frozen, I rebooted and the high temperature alarm went off. I rebooted again and in the BIOS the CPU temp rapidly rose to above 80C. I opened the case to find the heatsink was loose. I removed the heatsink to find some of the feet on the heatsink retention mechanism broken. I don't think I broke them in removing the heatsink, but maybe I did. Anyway, I've ordered a new HSRM and hopefully it will be fixed later this week.

I'm sorry to hear that. I guess the major questions with regard to the project are: Were any test results lost? And will Primenet be able to continue receiving results?

Primenet is unaffected. That computer is maintained by Scott in California. I doubt any data is lost. The machine has 3 disks. Two are in a mirrored RAID configuration. Every night the RAID disk is copied to the third disk. Once a week all data is copied to one of two other computers at my house.

If it is a P4, I have two never-used retail HSF assemblies I can send to you for free...

Now that I think about it, I have a case of P3/K7 HSF assemblies also, if you need that style...

Thanks for the offer. I've already ordered the $8 part from Intel. Should be here late this week.

Maybe this is a sign that it is time to upgrade from a P4 1.6GHz to the latest and greatest

come on what are u talking about < p4 1.8 lol when i got mine it was susposed to be a 1.6 but they sent 1.8 mabey that was cause most of there parts were out of stock lol.

Good ol' Intel. I ordered the part UPS ground and they sent it next day air.

Re-installed the heatsink and my machine is back up. Thanks goodness for CPU throttling!

They probable recognized who you are..... :innocent:

I had a socket break and the HSF fall of the CPU. The hi-temp cut out saved the CPU.

Wow, are heatsinks that sensitive? Maybe I shouldn't have carved off a bit of the plastic of the retention mechanism one and a half year ago when I built my first computer. It was in the way of one of those resistance equivalent capacitors, and I couldn't get it to fit otherwise. A few month later I saw an ad for the same motherboard (Tyan Trinity 510), saying that a special heatsink had to be installed...

Edit: That was two and a half years ago. Time flies.
