processor problems
 

Hey guys,
Just got a new AthlonXP 2400+ @2.00ghz, and my new motherboard is reading it as an AthlonXP1800+ @1.50 ghz. Any ideas why? Also, I can only seem to boot linux from my hard drive now, not Win2k, any explaninations?

Any help would be appreaciated. The motherboard is a DFI, and I got it from tigerdirect.com.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS update and that you are running at the correct FSB>

Check the board manufacturer's site for updates.

very simple go to site find update and possibily update program fallow bios update instructions. also check all the jumpers they sometimes are different then what they need to be best let processcer fsb select to auto. also dig around in bios mabey some oc is involved.

your bus must be running at 100mhz. The 2400+ is supposed to run on a 133mhz bus. If possible, go into your bios and look for a setting to up your FSB to 133.

ok, processor is running at 2.00 ghz, still can't load windows, any ideas on that?

Basically, Windows doesn't like it when main hardware parts get exchanged - esp. new mainboard and new type of CPU.

AFAIK, a "new installation of Windows over the current one" (which doesn't really replace all of your files, only the needed ones) does the trick in most cases. Just boot from the Windows CD and begin with the installation process. Somewhere inbetween, there should be a way to just install it over the current installation - I can't remember the exact details right now... :sad:
To be on the sure side though, maybe someone else could confirme this suggestion...

Tried that, tried a clean install, nothing seems to work. Tried NTFS formats, FAT32 formats... any other ideas?

Actually, I've found Windows 2000 to be able to cope with hardware changes quite nicely. Much better than experiences I've had with 95 or 98.

On the 2K boot issue, are you trying to dual-boot with Linux?

Just thought of an issue I had with booting my 2K machine. I forget what was initially happening, but I managed to straighten it out by using the 2K disk and going into the Recovery Console and fixing the MBR. After that I had another issue because while I was trying to figure out what the problem was before, I set the BIOS to fail-safe defaults. Resetting them to optimized defaults fixed the problem.
