Every few years the server gets upgraded but the hosting provider then just puts more shared accounts on it, so the system never feels any faster.

TPR has been keeping stats since before this forum was created.
Do they still charge the same amount, after all this time? If it's run on a Linux or Unix server, maybe they could be convinced to let you run a script every once in a while. (Not that I know much about scripts)

Yes.

The server runs FreeBSD. We couldn't let something as mission critical as this forum run on a Windows server.

We run thousands of scripts/jobs an hour. The issue is the CPU time the scripts/jobs take to run. Actually, the real issue is the maximum amount of time that one script/job can run.

Theoretically, the TPR stats software could be rewritten to split the work up into smaller pieces of work, and then we could avoid the per job time limit.

So you never get increased CPU time? Even with advancing computer technology? Those don't sound like very favorable terms...

(It's really time to split this off into a separate thread)
So you never get increased CPU time? Even with advancing computer technology? Those don't sound like very favorable terms...
We get more bandwidth and disk space. We probably get more CPU time since the processor is faster, but there is a limit on the number of seconds a job can run that is pretty short. They do this to prevent a runaway script or a bot attack from taking down the server.

There are ways around it but it is a lot of work. We recently coded a workaround for TPR's #1 contributer, whose personal stats page has thousands of returned results.
Account created: 20 Jul 2002 08:13 UTC
That's five years, within a small tolerance. I'm actually more excited that I'm close to 600 verified LL tests than by the anniversary.

It's been a while since I posted so I've got a few things for the "happy me"

3 years of being a GIMP!!!
50 factors found on factoring tests
1 LL test away from breaking into top 2000!!

But the thing that is making me most happy is that I just bought a quad core QX6800 2.93Ghz pc (arrives in 3 wks!).... allow me a few moments to drool in expectation...:w00t:

Top 500 in factoring!!! :w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t:

Added a Core 2 Duo E6700. Double-check has an iteration time of 0.024 seconds! (Still waiting for first-time exponent to finish P-1 test).

Top Factoring Mover!!!

In the TPR Top 500 stats I moved up 47 places in the last 7 days. :w00t::smile::grin::flex:

Second is 27 places.

Admittedly it is much easier to move up when you first make the top 500.

So I know my glory will be short lived ... but I enjoy it for now.

Over 400 LL Years

Just barely....

71 bit stage 2 factor

Found a 71 bit factor in Stage 2.
My 8th factor and (I believe) my first Stage 2 factor.
