97. Mini-Geek 205
I might be #97 (tied for #96 with Joshua2, actually...although I won't be after I post this...I'll be #96...but other things might've changed since Xyzzy made the list, so I'll just stop now), but I'm still on the top 100 posters list.

speed conversion
Who can propose a formula for converting the "P90 CPU hrs/day"
into "rank improvement by month", speaking of data on: http://mersenne.org/ips/top1001to2000.shtml and similar pages ? (e.g. say you have 2000 P90hrs/day which seems slightly above average for that page; how many "places" can you expect to win per month, on the average ?) PS: sorry maybe this is not exacly the thread to post this question but this seems to be a major concern for most folks around here... |

For instance if someone joined GIMPS and PrimNet 5 years ago and worked with a slow machine and then adds 2 very quick quadcores the speed showed in the pages is MUCH slower than the real speed. To know the real speed of an account you must compare two reports spaced at least one month. Jacob |

I'm not sure if this reasoning is correct. The ranking is directly connected to your "mileage" in terms of total CPU years done so far (no matter over what period), and the current hrs/day is -unless I'm wrong- the sum of the computer power you have at present, and not an average over your primenet history. The only average that has to be done is over some of your "neighbors" in that list to eliminate the "discrete jumps" problem. But I agree that details on this should not be discussed in that thread - Thanks to Petrw for the link, and let's say "Happy me, I'm in the top 2000 and over 25% of genious on ProjectEuler.net !" ;-D ! |
No Primenet's CPU hours/day is computed as the total number of CPU hours done over the lifetime of the account divided by the age of the account in days. That is why, if you look carefully, the figure is steadily rising for the top few producers, even though it is unlikely that they are adding a new computer every day.

Maybe is someone with an "in" asked TPR nicely they would consider expanding their Top 500 list to the entire list OR at least the top 5000 or 10000 which would probably cover most everyone active enough in GIMPS to care about such stats or trends. OR maybe if they provided the source to someone ambitious in GIMPS or Primenet they would implement it there??? |

We have to do some pretty unorthodox things to get those stats to run because they require a lot of CPU time to generate. Expanding the stats out further would not be possible with the current hardware we have.

We have the source code for it, since it is in PHP, but he owns it. We haven't been able to contact him for a very long time so either he has died or he doesn't want to be involved any more. |
Perhaps that will change when the server gets upgraded (which must happen eventually)? Haven't you been keeping track of the top 500 for over three years (perhaps substantially longer)? |

TPR has been keeping stats since before this forum was created. |
