I thought it was related to user activity, but it seems it's purely based on date, looking at the screenshot Mike posted
Are you referring to "New Posts" or is it something else? I do not see much change in it from day-to-day. It might be my browser, Firefox. I also clear the browser's trash every day. Temporary files, cookies, and so on. |

Just browsing, not using the new posts function. Don't visit for a couple of weeks, and the forum loses your place in threads and so on, so it's difficult to catch up on things. But we'll see how it goes with the adjustment. |
I got presented with a bunch of old "unread"s that were in fact read.
There appears to be a longstanding stupid bug in the forum software which causes the way in which you access the latest posts in a thread to determine on whether you see the thread displayed as read or not. For example, I follow the thread screenshotted below - I accessed the latest post by Paul Underwood in it directly from the GPU computing subforum, and the result is that from within that SF I see the thread marked read (pic1). Go up one level, thread marked unread (pic2). Go up one more level to forum main page, again shows as unread (pic3). Really, really, really annoying. |
We set the marker to 20 days a while ago. Nothing has caught on fire yet. Should we now bump it up to 50 days?

Since a few days, I have the opposite problem: The forum will mark stuff as unread, which I already read on a different machine (of course the same forum account). Is this related?

Yes. See post #15. Mike has bumped it up to 50 days. As long as no more changes like that are done, you should be fine from now onwards. |
Unfortunately, this problem is still occuring. I'll rephrase it since I think it is not related to the 50-day-extension-thing.
I'm using my forum account to read and post on multiple machines. When switching machines (using the very same account), there will be multiple threads with stuff marked as unread (not read) that I were previously marked read on another machine. The original problem was that the forum was marking stuff read after x days. That's not what is causing problems to me. |
