Thoughts on Philip Emeagwali
Any Comp Sci or Math Department folks want to comment on him?
http://emeagwali.com/ I was looking for folks that we might want to invite to the forum to make it more diverse and ran across him. Either he is really important and unknown more broadly, or he is tooting his own horn and on the index. |

His thesis was not deemed acceptable. He sued and lost. |

My question was honest. So you are in the "He is tooting his own horn and on the index" camp. Looking at the pdf's of one of his lecture transcripts and some of the other links I formed my personal opinion, but did not state it to avoid any biasing of others. |

He failed his quals. Twice. (see above) He is a clown and a fraud. It should be obvious after one reads a paragraph or two on his web site. |
... but has he invented Mersenne numbers?
(And if he did, why are they called Mersenne numbers?)
|
Yes. I say, Yes.
Invite him. It should be enormous fun to have (another) someone like that join. People don't have to be sane to be entertaining. |
... but has he invented Mersenne numbers?
No, but he discovered the last 57 of them. (Why aren't they called Cataldi numbers?) https://www.mersenne.org/primes/ |
FWIW

G.I.C.P.S does not have the same ring to it. |

According to https://mathshistory.st-andrews.ac.uk/HistTopics/Perfect_numbers/, Ismail ibn Ibrahim ibn Fallus (1194-1239) knew the first seven perfect numbers many years before Pietro Cataldi (1548-1626). Both ibn Fallus and Cataldi (and of course Mersenne (1588-1648)) had even longer lists which were, however, all incorrect. /JeppeSN |
