Just wondering... If someone were to report to the "news agencies", would they actually believe the person, as everyone can deny it? :P
|
George would have a hard time denying it because he would have to report it after the verifications finish (unless it really isn't prime).

Don't you dare fool yourselves into thinking that some intrepid science reporter is not subscribed to this board.
I know of a situation where a mailing list of less than 400 had a mole or leak, etc. Something that was mentioned on it showed up in the Star tabloid shortly thereafter. So, unless this is a 'private' board, it is known to the world now. :surrender |
Let the reporting begin.........CONGRATS  TO ALL... I hope we get A LOT OF NEW MACHINES http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104-5215542.html

Based upon M41 being close to M40, would this not slide M42 down to an area above where M41 was predicted to fall?
Since the 1.47..p rule seems to hold true (on average). And since the data from M38, M39, M40 predicted that M41 would be around M(32,xxx,xxx). And since M41 is closer to 1.05 * M40. Might not the new expected range for M42 to be in the M(33,xxx,xxx) range? If so we could have yet another quick hit on our hands.... Sorry Prime Monster  |
Can one of the double-checkers please keep a save file from just before completion of the test, or George, did you keep the one the lucky finder sent? I remember Peter Montgomery once mentioned that it'd be valuable to know which of the two possible values (+/- 2^((p+1)/2)) occurs in the penultimate step of the LL sequence for each Mersenne prime.

Let the reporting begin... the newspapers knew on 5/18 that there was a new prime.........CONGRATS  TO ALL... I hope we get A LOT OF NEW MACHINES

what`s the updated progress?
is it a new one? |
Hopefully TRex will finish this morning. We´ll all be informed later in the day, I think.
what`s the updated progress?
is it a new one?
It appears to be a new prime: M24036583 |
Glucas confirmed it is a Mersenne prime.
I'm happy to confirm that Glucas also said it is a new GIMPS Mersenne Prime.
Though the check has been done with a different program on a different HW, I think we have to wait for some more checks and to an official message. The exponent has been tested on a Bull NovaScale 5000 HPC machine, running Linux 2.6 with sixteen Itanium2 (1.3 GHz) processors (but only 48 % of CPU), in 5 days and 3 hours with a recent multi-threaded version of the Glucas program.
