Hmmm... Mine lasted 1:34, and then stopped. Restart attempt resulted in the blocked message again...

Sigh...
I have stopped using kaggle entirely due to the ban wave happening recently. Really disappointed considering their representative suggests prime searching is ok.

kriesel 2019-11-25 18:41

How long does a kaggle account last?

I'm wondering if it's worth climbing the learning curve on this one.
How many cpu-days or gpu-days does one get before the door slams closed?

chalsall 2019-11-25 19:25

Offical word from Kaggle. Prime hunting no longer "cool".

Hey all.

OK, just received this:
Thank you for your inquiry. Your account has been blocked for using mprime/mfaktc/etc to search for prime numbers. This is not allowed as it is over-utilizing our GPU resources.

We have unblocked your account with a warning. Please let your community know that this is not allowed anymore by our services. Kaggle should be used for data science, not Prime farming.
This is not unreasonable.

Reasonable, but not exactly clear. They specifically mentioned GPU resources. I use only CPU resources, usually only a few instances at a time. I've never had a problem, but should I take this wording to mean I should not use gmp-ecm to search for factors?

Since I'm not using GPUs and I'm not searching for primes I'm a little confused...

How they handled the change in policy left a lot to be desired. They already had your contact information from when you got the initial approval to do what they subsequently decided to ban. It would have been straightforward for them to write a nice note saying that they had reconsidered, and please stop using it that way, and share the change with others in the prime hunting community. Instead they just started blocking accounts, without a clear statement of why, and without any prior notice to you or the blocked accounts that the policy had been changed. Would a blocked account be able to even retrieve the files from runs in progress?

lycorn 2019-11-26 00:45

@PhilF:
I understand from your post that your account has not been blocked. That seems to indicate they are actually concerned with excessive use of gpus, but not cpus.

I agree. But, at the same time, the compute was being provided for free.

In a legal framework, little opportunity to claim harm.

kriesel 2019-11-26 01:04
I agree. But, at the same time, the compute was being provided for free.
The service was free, until it was blocked. But the mishandling of even free-use client relations can be costly. In ways they may never be able to quantify or even know of. Treat people badly, and they'll remember it, and prefer other options in the future. That's one of the ways businesses lose accounts or never hear of or from prospects in the first place. Oh well, so long, and thanks for all the GIMPS cycles.

Indeed. Manage the message.

This has shown to me that I need to ensure that I have a written agreement between the hosting provider and any students which might need access *right* *now*.

No problem.

I'm glad to have found this out now rather than when I (or a teacher) was in front of a classroom full of students.

They do understand what we are using this for, and that is is not crypto-mining, correct?

I have had no issues with it at all. Perhaps this is because I do not try to use it all the time. A single session a day with one of two notebook files I alternate between.
