Intel announces Xeon W-3175X 28 core monster cpu

Earlier this year, at Computex 2108, Intel demoed a system with 28 cores running at 5 GHZ! during their keynote address. Most people dismessed it as a one-off publicity stunt but Intel insisted it was a real product due in Q4 this year.
Well, it's here and here are some specs:

Xeon W-3175x
28 cores, 56 with hyperthreading
It CAN be overclocked. ( Obviously Intel did at their Computex Keynote )
base clock is 3.1 Ghz !!!
TDP is an astounding 265W. Air cooling is probably not an option.
6 channel memory with 2 memory controllers. With all 12 dimm slots occupied with 2666 memory, bandwidth is 119 GiB/s. This is similar to other high-end Xeons
Single socket only.
ASUS & Gigabyte already have motherboards for its unique socket. The ASUS mother board has 2 24pin ATX power sockets, 4 8 pin, and 2 6pin PCIE power sockets for its 4 slot PCIE motherboard. The chip has 68 PCIE lanes.
28M level 2 cache
38.5M level 3 cache

How much does such a chip cost? The motherboard? The 6 sticks of RAM? And specialized cooling?

That's probably close !

The price of the chip & motherboards is currently unknown.
They are expected in December.

Reviews are out. There's a list price of $3000 but I don't know how reflective of consumer prices it is, that may be the tray price and the supply may be low enough that demand outstrips it. Given that it vastly undercuts the Xeon 8180 I'm expecting the supply to be very limited. There will be two motherboards for it, only one of which will be directly available to consumers (the other is for OEMs).

Maingear sent out an ad announcing their version of this system. $14,899 (You have to click on "Ultimus edition" at the top of the page for this configuration)

I don't think I'll be buying one.

While I'm certainly not going to buy one it would be interesting to see how prime behaves on it. As we've discussed here previously, a single worker does well on the E5 2699v4 since the whole FFT fits in the L3. The FFT should also fit in the L2 and L3 as Skylake-X's cache architecture is non-inclusive (though also not strictly a victim cache). In practice I'm sure it's still going to get throttled somewhere. I'll have to ask around at the office to see if I can get time on one.

der8aur was running non-avx2 Prime95 on it, before and after delidding. It was getting close to thermal limits.

We should talk him into running proper benchmarks haha

Prime95 on this monster

Looking at the ASUS ROG Dominus Extreme motherboard ( 1 of only 2 motherboards that will work with this processor ),
It should be noted that a Prime95 record could be set due to the 6 channel ram and 2 memory controllers the processor has.
Admittedly, the 2nd set of 6 sticks of ram for the 2nd memory controller wouldn't provide THAT much increase, but if since we're dreaming, what the heck!
Also, the MB supports 4200 memory!!!
Since Prime95 is memory starved, this kit could have the max memory bandwidth of any.
Note that its the memory configuration and not the processors raw power that would benefit Prime95 most.
Of course other programs that need lots of bandwidth like Mlucas would benefit also.

NookieN 2019-02-11 05:33

Question is, if the FFT can fit in the combined L2 and L3, is DRAM access going to be the main bottleneck? Or is it going to be limited in that scenario by the efficiency of Skylake's cache mesh (and/or snooping).

Surely knight's landing has an advantage?
