That would be an awkward press release.
And, also, extremely unlikely. People tend to run GIMPS for very specific reasons.

The "glory". Ensuring the sanity of the hardware they are responsible for. Space heaters....
Congratulations everyone!!! :tu:
This is almost too funny to be true. But it appears to be.

The submission to Slashdot was accepted, but they couldn't deal with the exclamation marks!
M51 is already discovered and I will announce M50 and M51 together tomorrow GMT 08:00, Jan 04.

FYI: M51 is bigger than M50. The exponent of M51 is a Twin Prime (again). The number of decimal digits is > 32 million.
GMT 8:00 coming up in 40minutes, can't wait for M51. :)

Edit after 8 GMT: M51 still missing; people searching for it.
Just to explain this joke... An umlaut (double dots above a charter) is almost only ever done with a vowel, to remove the following e. Möbius, for example.
True, but my source states (in the beginning) that there are at least three languages where n̈ is used and represents the sound [ŋ]. /JeppeSN

To be honest, the one and only reason for my „upcoming announcement of M51“ was to make some fire under the GIMPS guys' asses. This seemed to pay off and speed up the process of M50. Only a few hours after my post M50 was finally announced.

As far as M51 is concerned, please have a look into the thread "Predict M51".

Thanks for your attention.

I think that was a little short-sighted because most have commented on how you seem pretty reliable, and this might ruin it a bit. It would have been much better to simply ask them where they were in the process of publication. As a general rule, the results start flowing in soon after.

What a prime to be alive.
standupmaths (the guy who printed the the 49th) has made some comments on Reddit about it!

I would rather call my action a positive butterfly effect.

In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state.

The release date of the press announcement was already defined on Dec. 28th, far before your claim.

Your action did bring nothing to the press release timings
That would be an awkward press release.
So GIMPS discovered a prime. We don't know who the discovered was though. Just some random computer in <insert country>.
IMO it would fit even more to the GIMPS idea and it wouldn't be awkward at all.
The discoverer is obviously the one who saw the notification first and mentioning a random computer taking part in the project would emphasize the idea of this collaborative project even more.
