Nope, never heard that one before .
I sincerely can’t explain how it feels reading a casual email from George saying my PC reported a prime, and could I possibly forward the last save file :surprised:! Being hundreds of miles away from home (returned yesterday) certainly didn’t speed the announcement. I’ve participated for so long, chasing (& expecting nothing more than) higher rank in the reports, factoring an actual Mersenne prime assignment beggared belief. Still does! I thank all who’ve offered me congratulations, but this was a group effort and all volunteers (i.e. you) deserve congratulations for finding another Mersenne prime, so... Congratulations GIMPS volunteers!!
Congrats Jon. Your perseverance paid off. Happy celebrations. |
Wikipedia: N̈ Test big:
N̈ n̈ /JeppeSN
Cf. the "in popular culture" section of that page. BTW, I must protest Wikipedia's patently false 'fictional' characterization - I saw Tap live in concert during their Break Like the Wind tour circa 1990, and I have the ticket stub to prove it. On a technical note:
Neither "N̈" nor "n̈" are characters in the Unicode character set, and have to be represented as a letter "N" (or "n") and combining diaeresis U+0308.
The sum of the digits of the number in the U+ combining diaeresis, 0308, is 11, naturally. |
Just to explain this joke... An umlaut (double dots above a charter) is almost only ever done with a vowel, to remove the following e. Möbius, for example.
Or as a diaeresis to denote a vowel starting a new sound, like in naïve or noël or coördinate. |

Who left the gate open? The nerds got out! |
What nerds?
I dare you - open any New Yorker and scan it through. You will find coördinate or coöperate or derivatives, for sure. |

Woof, woof! |
Congratulations to your luck! I rather find it fitting that a long time contributor such as yourself located the next Mersenne prime.
And now, on to the next!
That's a great point. I mean, it could have happened to some anonymous user on their very first assignment, but it is nice to see it happen to someone who's been plugging away at it. Now that the exponent is known, and we all know whodunit, let me brag on Mr. Pace a little bit, plus you'll get an appreciation for why I got excited to see the new prime show up from a solid performer (made it seem legit): His Primenet version 4 user id was created on Dec 12, 2003, so this really did come on the heels of his 14 year anniversary. His very first result came in almost exactly 14 years ago today (close enough...): M21869119 In those 14 years he has racked up 2,348 LL tests. 876 verified, 1417 unverified, 25 that were later factored, and (sorry to say) 30 bad results. Hey, it happens. Glad this one turned out okay. Most of those bad results came from 2007/2008 from just one machine. Anyway, all that to say, congratulations, and thanks for the effort over the years! |

That would be an awkward press release. So GIMPS discovered a prime. We don't know who the discovered was though. Just some random computer in <insert country>. |
