Hooray! I see from the history that I did trial factoring on this new prime from 72 to 74.
And turns out that was a total waste of time. LOL

FYI, in "techie" type news, we're competing with the Intel CPU bug today, but oh well. That is a bigger deal after all.

Yup!

I'm sometimes asked how much the GPU TF'ing helps with finding Mersenne Primes. Between M49 and M50 we found 3,457 factors. Based on an estimated average of 138 LL tests per day (over the last 90 days), we helped find this MP ~25 days earlier than if GPU TF'ing wasn't done.

Thanks everyone!

Nope, never heard that one before .

I sincerely can’t explain how it feels reading a casual email from George saying my PC reported a prime, and could I possibly forward the last save file :surprised:! Being hundreds of miles away from home (returned yesterday) certainly didn’t speed the announcement.

I’ve participated for so long, chasing (& expecting nothing more than) higher rank in the reports, factoring an actual Mersenne prime assignment beggared belief. Still does!

I thank all who’ve offered me congratulations, but this was a group effort and all volunteers (i.e. you) deserve congratulations for finding another Mersenne prime, so...

Congratulations GIMPS volunteers!!

BTW, Andreas, you have me to thank for the umlaut in your last name in the press release - I hope it ended up over the right letter. :)

You put it over the "n", right?

I was tempted to, but it seems some over-the-hill English hard-rock band has trademarked that:
I'd be curious to know how many others missed out on the glory by starting and subsequently abandoning an LL test on this exponent.
Well, that never happened to me, but I did the first time test of M20996009, and M20996011 is prime! (M40, actually). Oh well,... :bangheadonwall:

Just to explain this joke... An umlaut (double dots above a charter) is almost only ever done with a vowel, to remove the following e. Möbius, for example.
