Excessively expensive.

I spend only twice that for a dedicated server.

Did the sale ad use any language along the lines of "...hosting on dedicated server, gently used as homebrew e-mail server by a former U.S. secretary of state and then wiped, [url=https://www.bleachbit.org/cloth-or-something]like with a cloth, or something[/url]"? If so, better make sure to immunize yourself against software-hackery by The Putin prior to use.

However, the forum works (surprisingly well) and we are hesitant to make any big changes to it. Migrating to a different type of server would open numerous possibilities for us to break things.

Our level of competency with enterprise-grade web stuff is very low.

Are there backups? Lots of archived information and history here.
