Mfaktc file access error.
 

[B]I am new to mfaktc. I just got a new video adapter that is capable of running it. However it gives me an OS error message when I try to open it. I have attached a couple of images; the error message and a capture from GPU-Z. I may not be using the correct version. Ideas?

Where do you have mfaktc in the file system? If it is Program Files, or Program Files (x86), move it to a non-system folder. The Program Files folders restrict writing to disk.

The screenshot shows "c:\mfaktc\mfaktc-0.21\mfactc-win-32.exe", so it's not in a folder that is restricted by default by the OS, but I would still bet it is a permissions issue. Can you check the folder or file permissions on "c:\mfaktc" to make sure the account running it has read/write access?

It's in its own folder one level down from the top parent. Additional: I tried running it from a command box. It simply replies "Access denied." It then deletes the file. I've seen this before but it was a long time ago.

Thanks. I did not look closely enough. Your suggestion is most likely correct.

In case there is any doubt about "check permissions", right click on the folder and choose Properties. The Security tab has the permissions listed, and the means to (usually) change them.

I checked all the permissions. It has read and write access. I've had trouble with Win 7's permissions in the past. I can't remember how I solved the problem.

If the account you are logged in from has full security permissions on the Security tab of the folder properties, then another suggestion might be to take ownership of the folder, assuming your current account isn't the owner. That's available from the Advanced button from that same window, then the Owner tab.

For the possibility that it might not actually be a permissions issue, are you running any antivirus programs? There are some funny ones that can cause Windows to throw that error for some programs too. If so, you might also try disabling your antivirus programs temporarily to see if mfaktc can run successfully.

I am not running any AV software. The folder appears to have the proper permissions. I'm stumped. :exclaim:

Not that I would suggest this in general for that error, but can you add "everyone" to the security permissions with 'full control' for the mfaktc folder?

Also, just for clarification, when you tried running the program from a command prompt, you indicated that it "deletes the file". What file was deleted? If the executable program was deleted when attempting to run it, then I really think you must be running some type of antivirus program that moved, quarantined, or actually deleted it, even if it's just Windows Defender and not some other separate antivirus program.

It deletes the main executable. In this case, the one I renamed to mfaktc32.exe. It worked just once when I copied it, and the required DLL to a folder I call "Temp." I added the -h switch and it listed a screen full of data. At the bottom it displayed an error message about my Cuda library being older than the one used for the compilation. 8.0 vs. 7.5. I downloaded an older version, 65, from the archives. It failed again as before. Just to cover all bases, I disabled Windows Defender in the registry.

Disregard previous reply. I was not specifying a command line parameter, and did not have a properly formatted 'worktodo' file. I don't understand why that would cause the main program to delete itself.

Regardless, it's running. It's factoring a large candidate that would have taken probably a day with Prime95. It's going to do it in less than three hours.
