The question is which microcode version is needed. I am on version 0x84 which is later than then for asus. Whether it is late enough I don't know. I don't have time to look through the thread in that detail currently. I have just updated the bios although it is the same microcode version.

All recent test have been at 2133. Case with side on although it is the same without. It is stable apart from prime95 I think.
Where could I find information on the microcode installed? I am running an Asus Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1, with a BIOS built 11/29/16. I have looked in the BIOS, CPUZ, etc, and there are parameters I don't know, like EC1, EC2, and MEV. None of them have a form like 0x84. :confused2:

EDIT: i7 6700K on an Asus Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1.....

I get it from the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. It does ring a bell that I had it before installing that but I can't figure out where.
There certainly has been issues needing microcode fixes in these skylakes. That hasn't been the only issue for me. Going from the preinstalled bios to the latest didn't upgrade the microcode, however, it did make it stable.

Huh... I thought for sure CPU-Z had it but I just checked... if it does, I didn't spot it right away.

CoreInfo from Sysinternals will show it. Something like this (from a Xeon E5):
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2690 v4 @ 2.60GHz
Intel64 Family 6 Model 79 Stepping 1, GenuineIntel
Microcode signature: 0B00001A
