Freight drivers and other travellers from France to Ireland who prefer not to fly currently take a ferry to England, cross it to the other coast, then take a 2nd ferry on to Ireland. This is the shortest route (the great circle through Dunkirk and Rosslare passes somewhere between Reading and Oxford) and travel over land is faster than at sea. A ferry directly between Dunkirk and Rosslare, on the other hand, has to sail all around Cornwall and will therefore take about 24 hours. A commercial operator committing to running this must be confident that Brexit will cause a lot of travel disruption at the UK borders. |
will therefore take about 24 hours.
What? |
What?
It beats sailing around Scotland. https://goo.gl/maps/kgXTbJxuVJTLVg6i8 |
 Gah. It appears there is a ferry from Roscoff to Cork, but the additional time on land from Dunkirk to Roscoff doesn't save much time.

I looked at a map on a page listing ferries from the UK and Ireland to Europe. Note the route between Rosslare and Cherbourg, and the location of Dunkirk (Dunkerque) near Calais. The Rosslare to Cherbourg with Stena Line Ferries page says (my emphasis)
Stena Line's ferry the Stena Horizon operates the fastest crossing on this route. They offer 3 ferry crossings weekly in each direction between Rosslare and Cherbourg. This has to be the easiest way to get from Ireland to France with a crossing time of just 17 hours.
A 24-hour time between Dunkirk and Rosslare looks about right. |
The French need to purpose and build a canal between Weston-super-Mare and Southampton.
And the Dutch one between Liverpool and Hull. Maybe they could be a sort of tunnel and canal/channel combined. They could called chunnels. |
Maybe they could build really large ekranoplans. At almost 300 kn I'm sure they could shave off a few minutes. Making them large enough for heavy haulers could be a bit of a challenge.

Under EU Covid rules, British citizens (without a 2nd EU nationality) may end up being barred from entering the EU starting on 1 January.

I read that, this is so hilarious. |
It is getting worst...COVID-19 and Brexit bubble, we are doomed. Friday I was on Tier 2, Saturday Tier 3, Sunday Tier 4. Looks like by the end of the week I’ll be forbidden to leave my own bedroom.
