Scotland: "Bye bye U.K."

kladner 2020-02-01 16:29
Perhaps the fireworks affected them.

Fireworks have been known to have worse effects on birds, as described here.
I have seen dogs terrified by the bangs and booms.
Scotland: "Bye bye U.K."
It is a great shame that I don´t have a vote in the Scottish independence debate. I would vote leave.

The Scots only joined with England because the Darien debacle almost bankrupted them. One of the first things the English did was to bail them out to the tune of approximately 20 percent of the entire Scottish wealth at the time. We have been subsidizing them for much the time ever since.

You're going to need the Scots when England starts running out of water.

...and in sports events... (rugby etc)

...not counting the time when immortals will invade you, at The Gathering, you will cry for Duncan MacLeod...

...edit: and the whiskey, forgot the whiskey...
You're going to need the Scots when England starts running out of water.
Reducing the approximately 30% leakage presently tolerated by the water companies would be a big start.

England is a wet country. Even the driest parts, such as Cambridge, get around 50cm of rain each year. Here in La Palma we get 40cm, enough to keep the place green (largely with economically unviable banana farms) despite a population the size of Cambridge living in an area comparable with that of Cambridgeshire and despite a markedly warmer climate to promote evaporation.
...edit: and the whiskey, forgot the whiskey...
That's made by the Irish, from whom we have no problem buying their booze. Same is true of American, Japanese and other such suppliers of whiskey.

Perhaps you were thinking of whisky? I see no reason why an amicable commercial agreement can not be set up with the Scots akin to that with the Irish.

Anyway, English whisky is in production, though not as much as in centuries gone by. Perhaps England should attempt to be self-sufficient in the whisky business, exporting as much as is imported.

In the US, there is bourbon whiskey, Tennessee whiskey (similar to bourbon), and corn whiskey. Un-aged whiskey is known as "moonshine" or "white lightning," the terms being remnants of the largely bygone era of illegal stills which produced untaxed liquor, mainly in the South.

It is legally required that bourbon whiskey be aged in unused barrels. A lot of used bourbon barrels are re-used for aging other kinds of distilled spirits, notably Scots (Scotch) whisky.
Here in the good ol' USA, it's spelled "whiskey," while Canadians spell it "whisky."
Reminds me of an old advertising campaign with the slogan "Drink Canada Dry". The inevitable graffito was, of course, "I´m doing my best, starting with the whisky."
Old days watching Duncan MacLeod...and the soundtrack...wow
You seem to be conflating the original movie [starring a French actor as the mangy-but-immortal Scots git Connor MacLeod, a true mangy Scots git as the foppish immortal (well, until he loses his head to the American actor playing the evil Russian steppes immortal - well, until he loses his head) Spanish swordsman who befriends him, soundtrack by Queen] with the cheesy Canadian SciFi TV series based on the film(s).

The first film was of course very cheesy in its own right, but had some cool innovative camera shots and, as you note, a quite memorable soundtrack.
