Even as far back as 1996 I thought "GIMPS" was an unfortunate name for the project.

I suppose it got worse after "Pulp Fiction" and the classic "Bring out the gimp!" line.

I get the blame as GIMPS was my idea. I recall George saying "OK, as long as you don't call it Woltman's Internet Mersenne Prime Search".

I'm in my 60's. When I was a kid, "gimp" could be something like a bum leg, or someone who wasn't "cool". GIMPS just came to me in a snap. I was also thinking about the popular movie, The Great Race.

Pulp Fiction came along later and ruined it.

Regardless, we're in good company with The GNU Image Manipulation Program.

And then there is [url=http://gimp.org]GIMP[/url]. Understandably, some people want to change its name.

Yesterday was certainly a great day for publicity and also new user signup. Refer back to my look at the M48 announcement, but essentially the M49 data is even better.

Day 1 saw 5-6x normal user signups, day 2 (yesterday) was 22x normal levels (!!).

And then so far today we're at 48x the normal rate. I kid you not. And still climbing.

Now, back in Jan/Feb 2013 the average daily user signup was higher than it's been recently, but even taking that into account, this time around has seen significantly more interest as a result of all the press.

Traffic to the website yesterday was awesome, with something like 10x the normal pageviews, quite a bit of that was to the download page (the homepage and /primes/ page with the press releases and history of other discoveries were also high on the list).

I'll credit George and Scott for getting the press release out there and maximizing the visibility. I also really enjoyed Matt's video which I think did a good job of explaining what these doohickeys are in the first place.

But of course I think a lot of you also get credit because I'm sure you've been sharing links here and there and helping get the word out far and wide.

I didn't know if George or Scott consider raw #'s of user signups as proprietary info in any way. That's why I've abstracted it into increases over average daily signups.

I just come from a world where raw traffic #'s are closely held because of the competitive nature of ad supported websites, which doesn't really apply here. I just can't shake myself of that ingrained behavior. :smile:

Well, with that in mind...

Back in January and the first few days of February of 2013, the average daily new users created were around 60, give or take. After the announcement, Feb 6, 2013 saw new users spike to 873 in one day, which was the peak, and it tapered back to 60-70 per day after a couple weeks.

This time around, the pre-announcement average is around 40'ish. Yesterday (2nd day after the announcement) had 915 new users, and today has seen 2120 so far.

Bear in mind that not all new users are actually getting assignments. Some create an account online but may not have run the program yet...

Still, of the 2120 accounts created today, there are 8138 assignments for them.

1002 - LL first time
129 - ECM
2 - TF-LMH
1 - PM1 redo (? weird work type)

Odd to see so many TF assignments... I didn't look if they're assigned to CPU or GPU, but just be aware there could be some CPUs getting TF work out there. Could be older machines and that's what they'd be best at.

Is there any reason Primenet should still even hand out TF assignments, ever? I've noticed there are a ton of them out there, most of which I could blast few in hours on the GPUs and put those CPUs to real work.

FYI, in terms of getting results... of the accounts created since Tuesday, there have been 13 new factors found (exponents in the 130M / 280M ranges).

Quite a bit of TF work done (no factors found) in those same ranges (those make up a bulk of the results thus far, since they complete faster).

A decent amount of ECM curves on smaller exponents (200K+). No factors found for any of those, but they're mostly results of 3 curves at a time, so it's early yet.

And nice to see a pair of 1st time LL tests turned in so far in the 76M range. Although I'm not sure how that happened... it's a newer user but the assignments were from December. Might have been a funny quirk of someone creating a new account and moving their previous assignments over. Oh well. I'll count it anyway.

We'll know more about the attrition rate of these new assignments over the next few weeks/months.
