I don't know if he saw different results than I do (searching at [url]https://startpage.com/[/url], an anonymizing proxy to Google), but when you search for [URL="https://startpage.com/do/dsearch?query=gimps&cat=web&pl=opensearch&language=english"]"gimps"[/URL], the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search and the GNU Image Manipulation Program make up the first 7 links. Only the 8th is [URL="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=gimp"]related to the derogatory term[/URL].

Or, more likely, he didn't do the search himself and was just making a joke. :smile:

I don't remember hearing many comments before (e.g. earlier prime discoveries) about "GIMPS" being an "[URL="http://www.iflscience.com/editors-blog/largest-ever-prime-number-found-gimps"]unfortunate acronym[/URL]" or jokes (like Matt's in the video here) about its "other" meaning. Has "gimp" become more offensive recently or something?

I must admit that when I first learned of the GIMPS project, I did wonder why such an ... unfortunate accronym was used. Somewhat like the chosen name for the 7th planet in our solar system.
