is the announcement expected today?
see:
The announcement will be Tuesday on 9AM EST.
I'm semi glad my pages are 97 posts each now. |
He used the method I figured might lead someone to it... the "one weird trick".
The trick dates from wayback in time :-), but I presume is taken care of. Well, congratulations for the find. Tuesday is a big day. |
Is the new Mersenne prime a twin prime? Only a few can answer this -- maybe it should be answered after Tuesday's revelation

No, 2^p-3 has a factor. No factor yet for (2^p+1)/3, still searching No factor yet for the perfectnumber+1: 2^(p-1)*(2^p-1) + 1, still searching. |

Now that's a big hint. Thanks! |
...
With that said, I do want to publicly congratulate Dubslow for being the first (and only, so far) person to figure out the new prime. He used the method I figured might lead someone to it... the "one weird trick".
Ahh... oops on my part. Dubslow informed me that he didn't actually discover it through careful analysis, as I surmised. He actually knew the exponent as part of reviewing the press release and noticed the same quirk I had. But there is a quirk there, it just may be harder to spot than I thought. |
I imagine it's hard to spot if you don't already know what it is
Also for the record, George has emailed Numberphile, though who knows if he will actually do anything or be able to produce a video by Tuesday. |

Thank you for telling us. I am glad there was an attempt to contact him. |
