installation of OS trouble
Trying to install ubuntu but everytime I boot up with a USBDVD disc I get
CANNOT FIND LIVEFILESYSTEM despite having a HD plugged in and whirring. Clues, advice, guidance please? |
Attach the output from "dmesg" here. (Run this from a console. Maybe use Pastebin because it is going to be long.)
Edit: Not finding a "LIVEFILESYSTEM" might mean the image is not working right. How far does boot up? (The DVD is the "LIVEFILESYSTEM", not the HD.) |
Thanks.
How far does it boot up? The ubuntu logo comes up. The five dots come up. Then a black screen. I'll try cleaning the CD. |
When you boot, there should be an option to verify the installation media. Try holding down the shift key during boot if you don't see a menu.

We (vaguely) remember setting "nomodeset" in the boot string to work around certain video cards. It's worth a try.

My first step would be to check the system is actually booting off the DVD. Eg see what happens if you try to boot without anything in the drive. That should do something different. If not check the BIOS is configured to try the drive first.
My next step would be to try another live DVD or CD. If it boots OK that suggests the drive is OK. Testing the DVD in another computer would be a good idea if you have access to one (or a friend willing to test it for you). I've recently installed Linux on a new system off a USB DVD drive so I know it can be done. I used OpenSuSE 13.2 though. HTH Chris |
