Seen at a dealer we visited yesterday:

kladner 2016-10-23 04:44

(Chicago, IL, USA) Cubs win. We live just over a mile South of Wrigley Field. There are some very creative car horn choruses going on, accompanied by the sound of super-high-revving engines, followed by the smell of burning rubber drifting in a third floor window over a fairly narrow residential side street.

Right now, the ground traffic has quieted and multiple helicopters are the main soundscape.
It reminds me of the first time I saw Leonard Cohen. It happened that the concert fell on Fathers' Day. It also happened that the Chicago Bulls won their third championship in a row, that night.

When it became known that the Bulls had won, Cohen dryly remarked,
"I want to congratulate you on your great municipal victory. Enjoy it before the next tax increase."
There were certainly wild times on the streets, that night. We were glad to quickly get a cab and get home.

Ah! Relative quiet, at least for a few moments. I suspect that the traffic wave has moved out from around the stadium, and is now entertaining the Near West Side, North Shore suburbs, etc. There are still some hooters and hollerers to be heard on foot out the window behind my desk. :fusion:

Indeed! I guess many are either home, or ensconced in bars at this point. The sound levels are pretty normal for living a block or so from a major hospital/trauma center. Not even a siren for a while. :smile:
Of course, the El main line a similar distance away still rumbles past now and then.

Heyo! That's what I get for not reading the Lounge for a couple days. (To be fair, I had much more important matters on my mind.)

I've been to see two games this year, and am in the lottery for World Series tickets (long odds of course). I didn't know you lived so close kladner!

Bsquared, does this mean all two of us are now all three of us Cubs fans?! That would be awesome!

I've been a Cubs fan all my life, but sadly have not been to a game in quite a few years. Will have to remedy that, soon.

Hey, dem AAA Cubbies are out there! What's that experience like? I've only ever been to Single A minor league games.

bsquared 2016-10-24 17:26

Yeah they're fun, but of course not like the bigs. A lot more competitive than A-ball, for sure. It's been awhile since I've seen even the ICubs play.

We did some incredibly inelegant programming this evening and came up with this:
def isprime(n):
for i in xrange(2, int(n**0.5) + 1):
if n % i == 0:
return False
return True
list = [2, 3, 5, 7]
while list != []:
print list
tmp = []
for i in list:
for j in range(i * 10, i * 10 + 10):
if isprime(j) == True:
tmp.append(j)
list = tmp
The program appears to "run out of data" at eight iterations:
[2, 3, 5, 7]

I'm not sure what's going on here (other than the fact that there are Mersenne Prime exponents), but the title is German for "Project Floating Calculator Heating Unit". Are you using your computers to heat your home or something? That's not very energy efficient.
That's not very energy efficient.
That is totally energy efficient. If you heat a wire (which in turn heats water, or directly your walls/floor/etc) you transform electrical energy into heat, without finding any prime and without factoring any number. All energy transforms into heat eventually, regardless of the fact that it is passing through your processor or to your boiler. One kilowatt spent on your computer produces exactly the same amount of heat as one kilowatt spent on your boiler. And more prime factors...

However, since I keep my computers in an outhouse because they make a noise like eighteen screaming banshees and disrupt the tranquility of my abode, all I end up with as a side-effect of my prime factors is a warm outhouse. It is occasionally suggested that I could grow cactuses or keep tortoises there, but I go to the outhouse fairly rarely and it seems sad to grow cactuses and keep tortoises that are only rarely seen.

Just playing with you here, because I'm in a good mood! :smile:

Technically, if the energy produces information (for example, a newly found Prime or a newly found Factor), not _all_ the energy is converted to heat; at least, not immediately.

Entropy and Enthalpy; the "Inseparable Sisters". Physics is fun!!! :wink:

LaurV 2016-11-09 06:25

I can't imagine how putting 1KW into the computer would produce less heat than putting 1KW into a wire... Therefore I assume that heating a resistor also produces information, but for some reason I believe that we are too stupid to interpret it. :razz:

The feral teenager that lives with us (jvang) informed us today that he has improved his ACT composite score from 32 to 34. Unfortunately, his lowest score on the test (30) was math.

He is currently in the process of applying to a special school for his junior and senior year of high school. If accepted, we will have to rename him to the feral teenager who doesn't live with us.

I usually like driving. I like driving long, I love driving far, and the more aimless the better.
Our eighth IB1K this year:
The times and distances are similar to a trip I did two years ago. It wasn't a direct route, though, I took some scenic side drives along the way.

Xyzzy 2017-03-20 13:51
What defines a stop? No potty or snack breaks?
When we have a quick stop, we leave the ignition in the accessory mode. That way, we don't have to wait for the GPS to boot when we return to the motorcycle.

The ignition is controlled by a wireless key fob that is in one of our jacket pockets, so there is no risk of the vehicle being started and stolen.

If you look closely at the duration of the trip and the average speed, you will see that we stopped numerous times for a few minutes each.

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/03/intels-first-optane-ssd-375gb-that-you-can-also-use-as-ram/
Memory Drive Technology uses a middleware layer that boots before, and is transparent to, the operating system, and it combines regular DRAM with the SSD to make a single large pool of volatile memory. For most workloads, this will be slightly slower than if the same amount of DRAM were being used, but the cost should be substantially lower, and the power consumption modestly improved. Intel even claims that some workloads will go faster; although Optane "memory" is slower than regular RAM, the middleware layer that manages the memory can move data around so that it is closer to the processor that is using it, which can assist when using NUMA configurations.
Bunch of links, references, and math

I was aimlessly surfing Reddit not too long ago and found this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/6gew57/beat_the_freeze_race_gives_fan_a_generous_head/

So, how fast was the Freeze, and could I beat him without having a head start? Let's find out.

As a reader on that thread posted, the distance run was 531.4', or 162.0 meters: http://i.imgur.com/IF669E9.jpg The Freeze took 20.0 seconds to cover it (the fan got a 4.0 second head start).

My best 100m time is 11.98: https://www.tfrrs.org/results/48994_3195102.html 100-200m times are usually run at the same pace since the lack of a need to accelerate from a standing start again is compensated by fatigue at the end of the race. For instance, Usain Bolt's 100 and 200 times are 9.58 and 19.19 (2x9.58 = 19.16).

So, my 162 meter time would be 11.98x1.62 = 19.41, which is faster than The Freeze's 20.0. But that doesn't tell the whole story. His speed was restricted by the suit and by having to run on the dirt and not on a rubberized track. He didn't train to have a peak performance in that race either.

Further investigation found that The Freeze was Nigel Talton, who had a best 100m time of 10.47: https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/6gi5cq/the_freeze_has_been_identified_as_nigel_talton_a/ His best 162 meter time would be 16.96 (10.47/11.98 * 1.62), or 2.45 seconds faster than mine.

A fair race might be the following:
- Both of us are wearing spikes on a rubberized track
- No head starts, but the Freeze also has to wear his suit
- The Freeze is in the condition he was in during that race (1-2 seconds slower than his best?), but I'm in the best shape of my life and am peaking for that race.

I think the result would be a tossup. Not bad for someone who was the slowest kid in his class in third grade.

Bonus question: Would the fan have won if he didn't celebrate before the race was over? At first I thought the answer would be "yes", but this suggests that premature celebrations might not make that much of a difference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-urnlaJpOA

Side note: I was pleasantly surprised that people who graduated and aren't part of a team can still compete and race against college athletes. I can usually beat a few of them and not finish in the bottom 10% (see https://www.tfrrs.org/results/48027_3100367.html ), but everyone in the race that I ran 11.98 in was pretty damn fast!

Batalov 2017-07-08 21:26

I will simply put this here. :whistle:

I wonder if the title was not changed, the goal may have been achieved by now, no?
