You are getting into our favorite part of Illinois. The Shawnee Nat. Forest area is South of where the glaciers stopped. This means that there are fantastic sandstone formations which escaped being ground down.

[/INDENT]Giant City Lodge is a CCC construction of local sandstone and timber. They have nice cabins and a decent restaurant. There are trails in the park which range from Accessible to Strenuous. Lots of beautiful views without hiking.

The Lodge itself is an amazing building, with many signs of its hand made origin.

Ferne Clyffe has a wonderful trail past bluffs, leading to a waterfall. The trail is totally flat: about a mile hike.
