Friday means it's time for another of Counterpunch editor Jeffrey St. Clair's weekly Roaming Charges columns:

Roaming Charges: This Ain't a Dream No More, It's the Real Thing

Funniest line for me: "The best unintended consequence of Trump’s election to date is that it has prompted U2 to indefinitely delay the release of their latest album of musical banalities."

I couldn't make it through a whole paragraph of that partisan entertainment rant. A glance at the home page shows the same screeching tone. Just my opinion I guess, in this age of every-opinion-is-equally-valid.

Partisan in what sense? St. Clair takes shots at all sides, and CP features a wide diversity of opinions. 'Anti-establishment' is probably the one consistent theme there.

Counterpunch lacks credibility. They notoriously published a "Pol Pot did nothing wrong" piece denying that Cambodian genocide ever happened. (here)

I went looking for a previous presidential transition prank that I recalled involving removing the letter 'W' from keyboards. I take some solace in that Obama's team did not try to lower the bar further. Here's what I found:
http://listverse.com/2014/09/23/10-of-the-greatest-pranks-pulled-off-by-us-presidents/
The Clinton administration decided to play some fraternity-style pranks on the new Bush administration. They essentially destroyed the White House. Staffers, with the apparent consent of the President (when pressed, several Clinton administration officials confirmed they had played the pranks), ripped phone cords from the walls, left obscene voice mails, covered the desks in glue, and stole antiques.

Some of the pranks were actually quite funny, like when someone stole every letter “W” from the computer keyboards. Others were a lot less good-natured and actually quite bitter. Notes were affixed to cabinets that read “GET OUT” or “Hail to the Thief,” and stickers were put up displaying tasteful portraits of George Bush as a monkey. All-in-all, they did about $15,000 worth of damage.

That actually illustrates my "wide diversity of opinions" comment - I disagree with many of the pieces at CP, often vehemently - the piece you link by Mr. Shamir is defintely onesuch. One can rightly link the US promotion of klepto-capitalism around the world and its cold-war-era warmongering in SE Asia to the corruption of various US-friendly regimes there and the rise of countermovements like the Red Khmer, withot engaging in a hagiographical whitewash of the latter's subsequent depredations.

But, while "Consider the source" broad-brushing may be OK w.r.to MSM outlets with consistent top-down editorial policies like NYT or WaPo as well as blogs with such, IMO it is inappropiate for the "herding cats" kind of blogs, which left-leaning sites in general and CP in particular, tend to be. To be sure, such sites do need to be approached with a fair measure of "read at your own risk"-ness on the part of the reader, and as such are not for everyone.

OTOH if someone wants to advance fact-based arguments as to why the St. Clair piece I linked is off-base or the author a clear partisan for some faction, by all means let's hear it.

The Netherlands is to set up an international fund to support abortion services hit by President Donald Trump's order to cut US foreign aid.
Lilianne Ploumen, a Dutch minister, said it would set up "a well-financed fund" to allow other governments, businesses and charities to donate.

Speaking of the Netherlands, just in case it isn't already here someplace, this is a great introduction to the Netherlands made by a comedy show there, to introduce their country to President "Alternative Facts" Trump. Starts slow, but is worth watching...
