Combine this with Trump claiming the election "is rigged" is dangerous to our democracy.
I think the other thing is that people are inherently flawed. It's why systems like socialism or communism (in a pure form) can never, in my opinion, work. They rely on people behaving rationally and altruistically, and there's too many, maybe all, who don't 100% of the time.
Agreed. Humans are flawed. We're currently working that problem...

In the mean time, understanding economic systems is critical (and sometimes intractable). And yet even The Economist has described their namesake as less than the best of the sciences.

If you haven't yet read any Adam Smith, John Nash and/or Niccolò Machiavelli, I would highly advise it. Their passages can be quite enlightening....

The search monger has almost five million hits for debate drinking game; over half a million when restricted to news.

WSJ (paywall) proposes debate yoga poses.

Huffington Post snarks that a debate drinking game can kill.

I think that a fair and balanced drinking game is almost an oxymoron (because what is driving one to drink anyway?) but Quartz's looks ok: Quartz’s debate drinking game—updated in real time so you know exactly when to drink. Mind your balance especially when mixing drinks and metaphors. Mind the gap {subway, boob tube, intertube}.

Apropos of nothing I am bemused by the French pronunciation of an elephant's trunk resembling Trump, the frontpiece of this election's Republican mascot so I am including a French children's video on elephants: Un éléphant, ça trompe énormément

last debate tonight and when I saw American Horror Story as trending on facebook I thought it was trump related.

only_human 2016-10-20 05:30

Trump tried to say that "we have some bad hombres here." Spanish, Trump. What you actually said is "we have some bad hambres here." Hambre means hungry. Talking about taco trucks?

I didn't actually play any of the debate drinking games. I'm glad the debates are done.

Chris Wallace did an excellent job as moderator IMO.

added: USA Today organized a couple short clips of debate interruptions and debate moderation.

This applies even more, now that he has refused to commit to accept the election results.

As before, IMO, Clinton played Trump like a cheap violin, with plenty of bad notes coming out. He just can't restrain himself.

science_man_88 2016-10-21 02:35

the candidates are supposed to be at a gala where they joke around typically I can come up with a few against trump not so much about clinton.

Did Trump confuse "apathetic" and "a pathetic"?

Did you ever notice how when you type trump it doesn't correct you, but, when you type clinton it does? That's right even your grammar checker knows he shouldn't be in the capital.

Linguists weigh in on the 'bigly' vs. 'big league' debate
It is reasonable to believe that Trump actually intended his utterances to convey "big league."
The linguist community was quick to chime in. Tara McAllister Byun, a New York University linguist, passed along the findings, as did other linguists, noting that the velar pinch toward the end really seals the deal.

I watched that dinner. My biggest takeaway from it comes from the very beginning. After brief introductions, a very beautiful rendition on the Star Spangled Banner was sung and I couldn't help thinking that I wish my nation's anthem could be decently sung by more ordinary citizens.

This is a gratifying video to see. As always, we have concerns about complacency. Senator Warren did include that "nasty women vote."
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/oct/24/elizabeth-warren-hillary-clinton-nasty-women-donald-trump
Please note that one does not have to be totally enamored of Sec Clinton to despise Trump. :yucky:
