Move 29
Their move combines re-blocking the f file with the threat of a quick mating attack. 29...Rxb6 30.Qh3+ Kg7 31.Qh7+ Kf6 32. Qg6+ Ke5 33.Re1+ and mates. So we have to defend against this. At first glance the only two possible moves for us are 29...Qg7 and 29...Qh6. The latter has the advantage of discouraging their rook from moving off their back rank next move (because of ...Qc1+).
Is there anything else for us? EDIT: Perhaps 29...Qf6 is another possibility because if 30.Qh3+ Kg8 seems okay. |
29...Qf6 30.Qh3+ Kg8
then 31. Qh7++ , no? Oops, my mistake. We then 31, ,, Kf8 and expect to soon exchange Queens, while down three pawns... |
Indeed, and an exchange of queens is unavoidable for us if they choose to steer it that way. But we still have drawing chances, I think, because of the vulnerability of their two b pawns and the opposite coloured bishops.
What's our best move now? I currently have a slight preference for 29...Qh6 but other defensive queen moves might have things to be said for them. |
This is were I'm at, just stick it into a viewer.

Do you have a preferred 29th move for us as a result of all that analysis, WMH?

Not at the moment, I haven't gone thru it in any great detail. |

Okay, but the sooner you post an opinion, the better, because we need time to discuss it. |
48 hours to the deadline now, so it's pretty much "speak now or forever hold your peace" time. At least, it is if we want any hope of a discussion.
What are your preferred moves, team-mates? My preferred choice is 29...Qh6. But I also think both 29...Qg7 and 29...Qf6 are acceptable choices. |
29...Qh6 offers the best chance for a draw if white make's a mistake.

You and I agree. |
You and I agree.
But will they make a mistake? I rate their play this game as high, no clear errors. Even so, I do not prefer Qf6 or Qg7 over Qh6, but we're in trouble anyway. |
