I didn't think Prime95 would be able to 'multiple-instance.' Of course, there is a variant that can be ran as a service, but I do not have that here.

I believe I could write a small application that would copy the primary backup file to another folder, at a regular interval, and add to the name something like a number. An example would be "p0G04952-0001." The last for digits would imcrement on each copy. The only required option would be to select a source name. The only hurtle that I can think of at the moment would be some type of a 'lock' on the file that would prevent it from being duplicated, and to avoid attempting to copy it when Prime95 has it open for updating.

Why not use the InterimFiles=xxxxxxxxxxxxx? It is built in and works. Since the files are time-stamped, you can use the time stamps of the errors to find the error-free point in the timeline.
EDIT: Yes, the interims do pile up. I just tossed 14GB of the things. Working in the lower 40Ms, each file is nearly 5 MB.

I just found this in [I]undoc.txt[/I]. I have it currently set to every 500,000 iterations. That translates to about 30 minutes on this hardware. Of couse, I will end up with a lot that has to be manually deleted. I added it to [I]prime.txt[/I] just as Prime95 was about to finish a DC. I probably will increase the value to 1,000,000. I can delete the older ones as it goes along.

Maybe, instead of the backup scheme you talked about, you could write something to delete out-of-date interim files. A batch file would do the job, yes?

....[/QUOTE]You can run as many instances of Prime95 as you wish on a single computer, provided you start them from different folders. Of course, once you have more concurrent workers than there are cores, the performance will not be very good.

Yes, I agree. I would need to do some studying of batch commands. I am sure it has evolved a lot since I was a frequent user in the DOS days.

Oh, I see. I keep Windows Task Manager pinned to the task bar. If I see something a bit strange going on, like a lot of HD activity, I use it to see what the source is. To date, I have never seen more than a single instance of Prime95 on either of my machines.

I just discovered that the interim backup files are not independent of each other. They are part of a larger archive. I copied all the parts to a different folder and extracted them. I ended with one large file, 155 MB in size. I am not sure what Prime95 would be able to do with this! Does anyone have any ideas?

The file without last name is the normal backup file, the first interim backup file should be called .001.

If you take any of the single files and open them with for example 7-zip you can extract them individually as well. Prime95 compresses the files with an algorithm that 7-zip and WinRAR recognize (LZW?), and since the files are called .0xx they automatically concatenate them into one big file which is meaningless.

After I posted last night, I looked at several with a hex editor and found they all began with the same byte sequence:

I loaded WinRAR and deselected all but three of its supported file types. I was trying to remove the assocation from the ".001" file. I didn't know they were .LZW. This is not on the list of supported types in WinRAR.
