using WoL (= Wake-on-LAN)
 

Hi,

I've got about 5 computers none of which are seriously quick but nonetheless can do some serious work.

My plan was to get to switch on only during the day so that the fans don't make too much noise (I deemed
it's not worth using a silent PSU on any of them or a silent heatsink).

I'm hoping to be able to wake them up using WOL.

I tried without success so far.

Before I give all the details of what I've done, is there anyone who knows much about using WOL?

If your motherboard supports it, you enable it in BIOS. Then, you need to send a 'magic packet' to the MAC address of the NIC to turn on the computer. Some routers support sending a magic packet automatically.

Indeed. WOL is easy (and useful) if you know what you're doing.
