need a heatsink

1 Attachment(s)
Hi,

I recently bought a heatsink bracket for a motherboard I have. Here's a photo of it on the board :

It's one of those motherboards with no manufacturer name on it.

I don't think I've got a heatsink that'll fit on it.

Does anyone here have the wherewithal to be able to tell what kind of heatsink I need to buy for it? (One that with slot into
the clips on the bracket).

What socket is it? That is the thing I look at when buying a heatsink to determine compatibility. Bit of a moot point these days as most heat sinks fit on most sockets.

I don't know.
The processor is an Intel Celeron 1.7GHz. There a bit more info on chip but is that enough to identify it?

That's not enough to be certain. Look for something that says "Socket 478", "PPGA478" or something like that on the plastic around the CPU or on the motherboard. You can then Google for that along with "cooler".

But if it really is a Celeron 1.7 GHz, it's over ten years old... you might be better getting a new machine.

I was just thinking of using it for some P-1 factoring. Is that a daft idea ?
I was just thinking of using it for some P-1 factoring. Is that a daft idea ?
TBH, it would be better used as a house everything-server (DNS, printer, file, ntp, ...) and run an ECM client on whatever cycles are left over. It will double up as a nice fan heater as well, of course. Keeping my study warm up here in the sub-arctic is a valuable use of my machines over and above the computation they provide.

If you want to use the electrickery for anything other than running a fan heater it might be better to pick up a machine half its age (or less) for very little money. I've seen more powerful systems on freecycle ...

Don't worry too much about the brackets, either. Most of the air coolers I have used have you remove the bracket and bolt the mounting hardware in the same holes.

A 1.7 GHz Celeron is not likely to need extreme cooling in any case. If you choose to proceed with this system, a Coolermaster 212 (I don't remember the letters in the name) at $20 would be plenty, assuming that it comes with mounts to match your board.

What's an ECM client?

The Hyper 212 coolers won't fit on a socket 478 without modification.

If you want to spend a little money for something quiet, try this, or for something basic but more than adequate, try this.

I have a socket 478 heat sink out of an old Dell. Would be willing to part with it for the cost of shipping. Let me know.
