Let me retract this one. Something doesn't look quite right with the above poly.
I think I started to perform some testing late last night. When I got up this morning I saw I needed two more regions of sieving and forgot I was still in test mode.

C229_151_42 appears to producing at a prodigious yield, far greater than my test sieving results above. So high that I find 14e’s results difficult to believe.

Is there an issue with 14e? Lots of dups? Inspection of the poly file from 14e shows nothing obvious.

Are you sure that your test sieving was over 5k rather than 2k ranges?

I have run
/work/math/gnfs-lasieve4I14e snfs -r -f 150000000 -c 5000
and see 6597 relations by Q=150002063
total yield: 15968, q=150005021 (0.11933 sec/rel)
is quite close to 5/2 of the claimed yield

I think I see what may have happened - the previous job I test sieved was C167_M31_k33, a GNFS job. Test sieved on the -a side. May have then immediately used the same scripts to test sieve C229_151_42. Embarrassed apologies.

Thank you for taking this uglier than it should be job.

Confirmed the above did NOT happen. Reran C229_151_42 for 5K with Q=20M on the -r side and got 11483 relations. Odd. Maybe it is machine or siever dependent? I’ll rerun the test sieving this evening on another machine/environment. All my boxes are Win64, if that matters.
The best poly so far, for the C174_M127_k24, at 50% complete with CADO.
Is this good enough?
That looks a perfectly reasonable polynomial.

Test-sieving results are only meaningful if you list the limits and the command line used: with
lpbr: 32
lpba: 32
mfbr: 64
mfba: 64
alambda: 2.6
rlambda: 2.6
alim: 268000000
rlim: 268000000
I get
> ./gnfs-lasieve4I14e -a M127_k24.gnfs -f 268000000 -c 999
total yield: 1638, q=268001011 (0.34965 sec/rel)
> ./gnfs-lasieve4I15e -a M127_k24.gnfs -f 268000000 -c 1000
total yield: 3824, q=268001011 (0.21752 sec/rel)
> ./gnfs-lasieve4I16e -a M127_k24.gnfs -f 268000001 -c 999
total yield: 8517, q=268001011 (0.23832 sec/rel)
so, unless you tell me not to in the next day, I will queue this on 14e (it's much less efficient than 15e, but the queue is much shorter so it will get done quicker)

This is exactly the same polynomial as before! The E value appears different because you're integrating over a different area, but all the coefficients and the skew are the same.

Also I'm a little confused that you call it c174_something when the number is of 176 digits in length
Also I'm a little confused that you call it c174_something when the number is of 176 digits in length
Kosta's poly has a C174 in it:
While ((2^127-1)^24-1)/(2^127-2)/factors = C176
Probably a copy/paste mistake:

Kosta's first polynomial (in http://mersenneforum.org/showpost.php?p=487728&postcount=1473 ) has the correct 176-digit integer, the second one (in http://mersenneforum.org/showpost.php?p=487750&postcount=1476 ) has the two digits missing.

A poly for this C176 (not C174) could be a tiny bit better. CADO always tries to minimize lognorm, not to maximize Murphy E. Because of that CADO always reports a skew that is slightly off optimal. Notice also that c0-c4 and Y0 in these polys are different.

177 1.527e-13
178 1.194e-13

Sorry everyone, its fatigue, wrong number, wrong poly. The number is of course C176 (link to factordb).

A much better one was found by Cado in the meantime.
This one is best by yield and lognorm, but only second best by Murphy, maybe Cado is right to optimize lognorm?
I can post the best-by-Murphy too if you like.
Suggested sieve range is 20-200M.

VBCurtis 2018-05-31 23:47

A C172 is on the border of 14e and 15e- which queue did you mean this for? If 14e, you really should test-sieve those parameters to see how low the yield is. Something like 134M and/or 200M on 32LP would work much much better.
Edit- you suggested a sieve range, so you did test-sieve? Can you share yields? Perhaps there's value in low lim's that I haven't explored.

debrouxl 2018-06-01 06:54

Well, the 14e queue is starving, while the 15e queue is lengthy, so I'd target 14e :smile:

unconnected 2018-06-01 07:00

I prefer 14e queue because 15e very big ATM and the number is suitable for 14e. My estimates based on previous tasks and of course I did test-sieve.

So, 20-200M should give us ~200M raw relations.

pinhodecarlos 2018-06-01 11:08

By looking at FreeDC stats the majority of the 14e/15e wus are done by the gridcoin pools and Syracuse University, which I think they have selected all types of wu's on the preferences page. If the 14e dries they will crunch 15e but I suppose Syracuse University has a few cores only dedicated to 14e but only Greg can help us there.

To clear my point, let the 14e queue dry and the long 15e queue will be picked up with 30k wu's/day.

fivemack 2018-06-01 12:27

swellman: I notice you've been submitting a number of polynomials with rlim=34000000. I've generally been changing this to 33500000, because that's just under a power of two whilst 34000000 is just over, and I have a vague belief that just under a power of two makes some bit of the sieving process slightly faster.

That was probably me. I was under the impression lim should be just over a power of two.

Hmm, 2^25 = 33554432.

Sounds good. I will hold my numbers until a later date. Most are GNFS which needs a poly. This will give me time to be better prepared.

Test-sieving indicates Q range from 15-220M should yield ~650M relations:
Q=20M 0.061 sec/rel, 4806 rels
Q=40M 0.067 sec/rel, 4119 rels
Q=60M 0.075 sec/rel, 3542 rels
Q=80M 0.080 sec/rel, 3236 rels
Q=110M 0.089 sec/rel, 3501 rels
Q=140M 0.100 sec/rel, 3101 rels
Q=170M 0.107 sec/rel, 2287 rels
Alternately, 32/64 on the rational side and 33/66 alg side should yield 510M relations from Q=15-240M; the expected sieve time is marginally longer, but this saves a bit of disk space and server bandwidth.
I'll handle the matrix, please.

Please divide by 10. I’m seing set to 1640M.

Oops. And sure enough, the WU generation job ran in the meantime, so there are now WUs for a very large range of q values :'(

Protection, or at least warning, against a likely extra zero was on the wish list for the crunching management page rework, but nobody had and has time to do that.

Picking up an old message by posting an interesting stats. By letting 16e queue dry (I've stopped chasing Greg) it's clear the majority of the clients can run and process the 15e wus at a rate of 90k-100k per day. There was a peak of 120k when some friends were running Formula Boinc.

I've sent previous candidates in this list to 14e; since 15e is close to empty, it's a nice time to see how matrix size changes from 14e to 15e on similar jobs.
Test-sieving indicates Q-range of 10-95M to yield 420M raw relations: (1k ranges tested)
Q=10M 0.084 sec/rel, 7271 rels
Q=20M 0.098 sec/rel, 7565 rels

Q=60M 0.132 sec/rel, 4216 rels
Q=80M 0.132 sec/rel, 3730 rels
Edit: I'd like to do the matrix.

Something looks wrong - the bit size for my C171_M17_k43 job increased from 30 to 31, at least that’s what is displayed on the 14e status page. Further, the poly that I proposed for this job is not on the NFS server, rather it appears to be that proposed by RichD one post later.

Is this a cut and paste error? Or am I totally misunderstanding what happens behind the curtain?

C243_139_70 seems ready to sieve on 15e, but I had a crash using the more recent ggnfs sievers on a Window 7 machine. Using the older sievers worked flawlessly. I do not understand why this is happening, maybe it's only a problem with Windows? The original crash happened using Yafu, but it was a ggnfs-arg(sp?) crash. Attempting to sieve it directly with the ggnfs executable quickly (< 1 minute) resulted in exit with zero yield though there was no crash reported.

Experienced the same behavior with the related polynomial c5/c1 = 16/35.

Obviously if this is going to be a problem with BOINC or NFS@Home, then it should not be queued.

I can attempt to find another polynomial entirely, say a sextic, though they be kind of ugly for this composite.
