Thank you all, I'm afraid I implied something I did not ment.
I have a N580 Lightning, which has always been quite loud.
I started with the DCII 570, which was really nice.
Considering a swap, I have my eyes on a DCII 580, €125,- (Europe)
I was wondering if upgrading would be a better option, which seeing most of the answers is not worth it.
The only game I play is World of Tanks, which is no problem for the 580.

My 570s were also getting old and loud.

Beware that if your will warranty them, there's a good chance that the shop will replace them with other, subpar models (without even asking you; they think that this is an upgrade - "a new shiny 650Ti for the old 570". Nuts!) Anyway, there is no magic bullet, just tedious negotiations with the shop. And it seems that there are no magically good providers. Both EVGA and Gigabyte cards got sick and tired of this life (of 24x7 100% load ;-) and died.

EVGA did replace my dead one with a one-fan model 570 (after an initial silent stint with a 650Ti swapperoo).
Gigabyte (the other card) died four times and was "repaired" each time. Finally they replaced it with a 570OC, but when its fans also started rattling, and I (knowing from the past that they will try to switch) called them, they said that they have no 5xx series, so I didn't RMA. I got fans from AliExpress, that's the only place the compatible fans are. Decent replacement (~ two week wait for the delivery); I got extras, so I am prepared for the next bout of rattling in a year. (When the ball bearing goes, then no amount of oil will help.)

650 ti, seriously? That is a ripoff.

Something tells me that this is what works for them. Maybe with 50 or 75% probability? that's good enough, isn't it? I have 2 x 660's in now. A Palit Geforce that is overclocked by 50Mhz and turns in 180 days/day @ 72 degrees..

.. and a Gigabyte Windforce x2, over clocked by 100Mhz, turns in around 188 days/day only clocks in at 58 degrees.

Production - ~370 days/day, or about 25x the I7-4770...

Well if you still have the 280X, I would keep it! You keep money in your pocket, that you can use to pay the electricity bill. Running it at 1000 MHz will yield more or less the same Trail Factoring GHzdays performance as a not OCed GTX580. Since you are not running 24/7, running it a bit longer a day will get you a better or the same result.

A couple of days later I noticed that the POST test was complaining about the fan again. I am pretty certain that is because it wasn't getting upto speed fast enough. While it was pretty much working I had lost faith in it. I replaced the fan of my Freezer 7 Pro with the fan of a Freezer 13 pro quiet(it fit on the old heatsink) and now it is the case fans I can hear.
