GTX580 replacement
 

I'm currently doing some TF work at mersenne.ca or otherwise on GIMPS, using a GTX580. Great GPU, but it is getting quite loud.
Since the 600 serie is no good for computing, how about the 700 serie?
I can see on James' website that the 580 is still competing with the higher-end graphics card from today...
Should I stick with the 580? Perhaps something from the AMD side, I still have some 280x's.

My 580 died, poor thing didn't like running at 97 degrees for days at a time.

Have a GTX-660, turns in 178 days/day, 66 degrees, pretty much silent. Who said they aren't any good?

Well, the 580 runs about 440Ghz-days. I would like to hit the number or higher. My computer is not running 24/7.

You could get a R9 290X. Or a 780 Ti if you can afford it -- that is a monster at CUDALucas as well.

Are you saying that noise from the card has increased? If so, is it the fan(s) going bad? Depending on the make and model of card, there may be replacements available on Ebay, and some other online locations. The ones I have looked at are for Gigabyte 3-fan models, and Asus DirectCU 2-fan types. I don't know about replacements for single centrifugal blower type cards.

If you want to keep the 580 running (which I would lean toward), there are also 3rd party coolers out there, though those are a big price jump from fan replacements.

You could, but if you use your PC for real world stuff (mine is used for Premiere Pro) then the AMD might be useless as only the nVidia gets the hardware boost for video rendering...

Edit: well not exactly useless, but you get the drift

Fans going noisy might mean they just need a dust clearout. Mine has been noisy for a while but I have avoided messing with it as I am currently writing my dissertation on that pc. It refused to boot this morning complaining of cpu fan trouble. I cleaned it out and now it is back to its old self. A little bit of oil on the motor might go a long way as well(just check what the best type of oil is first).

If increased noise is not explainable from increased computation load or ambient temperatures where your machine is located,
it may be worth a try to take the board out,
remove its plastic shroud to expose the heatsink, and blow the dust
off the heatsink and carefully clean the fan blades. This is a cheap alternative and
somtimes works.
