Who would've thunk....
Have a GTX 2080Ti for 2 months and I climb to top 20 in both TF and ALL for the year.
(And a GTX 980 hanging around too; and 32 cores of CPU). Respectively they produce: 4,000, 560 and 200 GhzDays/Day. Top 20 Lifetime TF and ALL are just a few months away And top 10 for both for the year is now a real possibility. |

Just wondering if you would do differently. |

You are addicted to GIMPS if... ...you don't regret a single penny spent for the project  :tu: |

My wife does point to our power bill regularly. :ermm: Other than that I always did upgrade our family computer each 4 years or so. I just didn't used to keep 4 running in the basement just for GIMPS (ummm and as backup device for important documents from the family computer) What I have spent over and above just for GIMPS is in the order of $4,000 Canadian over the past 12 years I've been a member. Most of that this year on the big CPU and GPU; but I did get permission from SWMBO to buy a shiny new toy because I took one more work contract when I could have been retired. I try to justify it in my mind that I don't smoke; almost don't drink; don't gamble. I think this guilty pleasure is a little less of a health risk; as long as she doesn't stab me in my sleep. To be honest, the money I've spent on GIMPS is much less of a concern to me than the time I've spent monitoring and tracking my results; very, very little was actually necessary to keep the farm running; most was just me and my love for stats; and math. Several other hobbies and interests have suffered as a result. That being said, there is only me to blame; before GIMPS I was quite easily distracted by other "squirrels". I used to spend a lot of time of projectEuler and before that on video games (I still LOVED solving *ALL* the Lemmings levels.) So to your question: There isn't really anything I've been unable to buy or would like to buy if I had this extra money. If I had a lot more money there is a slim chance I could talk my wife into letting me buy a Tesla :batalov: Sometimes I lament the time spent but on the other hand I've learned a lot from my contacts at the forum and made a few good friends; one of which was generous enough to host my wife and I during a vacation. |

No, that's a foolish persons thought. |

I don't know whether this should go in the "happy me" or "unhappy me" thread, but I guess I'll put it here. After all, I suppose I'm more of a "glass half full" than a "glass half empty" type of person.
Anyway, a guy I know had just finished a short stint in the military and was thinking of becoming a policeman or a firefighter. One day, something on the news came up regarding a suspect who ran away from the cops, and it eventually turned into a discussion about how fast you'd need to be in order to successfully run away on foot from a lone cop who doesn't have and can't call for backup. "Well", he said, "a few fire departments and lots of police departments require you to sprint 300 meters as part of your fitness test, so that's probably going to be as good of an estimate as you can get. It's a part of my training as well. If I'm having a good day, I can get the 50th percentile time of 56 seconds for my age group (20-29 year old men), but I can't even comprehend how some folks can run those 42 second 99th percentile times." "It's not that hard if you train for it and run regularly." "Really? I'll bet you can't do it this week, and I know you run regularly. Loser takes the winner out to lunch." "Challenge accepted." I looked up the standards at: https://www.tucsonaz.gov/files/police/CooperStandards.pdf and found that he was indeed right about having to run under 42 seconds to be in the top 1%. The next problem was figuring out how to get a sub-42 time. Although I did jog a few miles 4-5 times a week, I hadn't done any focused sprint work in months, so I thought that my best chance would be finding a track meet that had the 300m dash and hoping that the adrenaline would pull me along to sub-42. Eventually, I found a meet, and the race was scheduled for Saturday, January 19. At check-in, I had a choice of running in either one of two heats (there was a third heat, but it was all girls). Heat 1 had 7 or so guys who had already signed up. Heat 2 was much smaller and had one girl and maybe 1-2 other guys. I chose heat 1 since I figured it would be more competitive and because choosing heat 2 seemed to be a lose-lose situation. Regardless of what my time was, if I won, I feared that the reaction would be something like, "you chose a slow race so that you could win against a girl and a random guy or two? Big deal." If I lost, I might be getting comments like "I can't believe you train regularly and still lost to a girl. Man, you suck." So I ran heat 1 and finished mid-pack in a time of 41.62" even though my legs felt like lead weights during the last 10 seconds of the race. I was pleasantly surprised considering that this wasn't too far off my all-time best of 39.60", set a few years ago when I trained specifically for the 200 and 400 (that performance is at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnhK2oM_HUQ in case anyone's curious). I then watched heat 2 and saw something completely extraordinary. There were four people in the race. One girl in lane 4, and three guys in lanes 3, 5, and 6. The girl shot out like a rocket once the gun went off. Within seconds, she had pulled even with lane 5 (who started out ahead due to the curve that everyone had to run), and opened up a considerable distance on lane 3, even though both of them were running just as fast as I had been a few minutes earlier. The guy in lane 6 was noticeably faster than I had ever been, and even he struggled mightily (and failed) to avoid losing to her. Approximately halfway through the race, he was overtaken on the curve and finished a second behind. He nearly collapsed on the track and lay there in exhaustion for a few minutes. We then found out that the girl he lost to was Sydney McLaughlin, who made it to the semifinals in the 2016 Olympics, set the collegiate record for the 400m hurdles in 2018, and also set the 400 meter world record for the under-20 age group last year. Her time yesterday was 36.90, a coincidental digit re-arrangement of my 39.60 best: http://www.prepcaltrack.com/2019/01/19/cerritos-college-all-comers-ss-2/ As the lane 6 guy lay there on the track, someone asked him, "Dude, you alright?", to which he said "I lost to an Olympian, and I feel awesome!" I felt happy for him, but I was also sad and disappointed because I completely missed that opportunity. The aspiring cop/fireman whom I was with arguably had it worse, as he completely missed the race since he headed back to his car after he watched me run. When I saw him after my cooldown, he congratulated me and was completely baffled as he read the mixed emotions on my face. That is, until I explained the whole situation to him. He was a bit upset that he didn't witness such an amazing performance, particularly one that was from a unique vantage point (people got to run around the infield and watch the race, instead of just sitting idly on the bleachers). But he thought that the whole thing was quite inspirational. Oh, and the place that he took me to for lunch? Firehouse Subs. |
Off to La Palma again today. That's why I'm posting at this ungodly hour.

Will you return before 29th March or everything is packed? |
My 3rd 100K
Nothing to do with the recent topic of running.
I now am over 100,000 GhzDays lifetime in LL, DC, and P1. Just noticed that also got me to top 10 lifetime in P1. |
