Today is also the computation day (some communities celebrate it for a few years now, but some on the next day).
So that means February 14th is lovers day, computation day and lovers of computation day. Thank you, thank you. I also do bar mitzvahs(sp?). Here's my card. |

So, Phobos has completed her extended temporal combination of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. She was given a clean bill of health on Sunday.
We need to keep watching carefully, but no knife. Happy Dance! :chalsall: |
Rooster Trap...

So, when we moved into our new house there were several feral chickens in the neighbours yard. I love animals, so I (stupidly) started feeding them small amounts of bread each day. Many of the chickens then started hanging out in our yard, including two of the roosters. Unfortunately the roosters apparently are Chinese, in that they start crowing very loudly at 0300 local time... Not good.
Rather than kill them, I built a trap out of a bit of plywood, 1" x 2" boards, a bit of dole, and a bit of what's known here as "BRC" (a stiff wire mesh). The trap door is triggered by a string attached to a paper clip which holds the door up until only the rooster is inside the trap (he's smart enough to send his "girls" into the trap to fetch the bread for him, so I fed them but not him before the capture). After I trapped him I fed him as much bread as he could eat, and then transported him a couple of kilometres away to a rural area which had a cow and several sheep, and a source of water. I plan to capture and transport any other roosters who come onto our property, and also a few of their girlfriends. Attached are two photos. The first is of Phobos testing the trap while it was being constructed. The second is of the captured rooster and two of his girls. Interestingly, the rooster didn't seem at all consternated about the capture nor transport. |
Very vaguely related to the above, Glenda (our orange top-of-the-pecking-order) hen attacked Genghis (our orange and white bottom-of-the-pecking-order) tomcat a couple of days ago. Only a couple of quick pecks and no damage done except, possibly, to the cat's dignity. He slunk off and the chuck appeared to be satisfied with herself. Hierarchy maintained.
Puts into perspective the often-asked question we get: are the chucks safe in the presence of the cats? |

Yeah. My cats are absolutely terrified of (and totally subordinate to) the chickens. |

Happy BIrthday! |
Happy Birthday! That sound like a great self-gift. Enjoy! (and report back!)
On my own part, today I revived my large photo inkjet printer after a few years of neglect. It took several runs of nozzle checks and a "power cleaning"s but it is now working with all its wonderful output quality. |
Got told today that I got a job at Cambridge university at the strangeways research laboratory.
Excellent! SWMBO used to work there until she retired. We still meet up with some of her ex core-searchers.
Drop me a line when you're in town and we'll meet up for a beer or intoxicant of your choice. If you don't know Cambridge we can also give practical advice etc. |
