Again, I don't care what the CPU is doing since I mainly see it as the platform for the GPUs to work from.
What I find interesting about this optimization problem space is it can be mapped into a simple economic model.

There are "cross-over" points along the efficiency profiles of the CPUs and the GPUs for each work-type and range.

It has become a hobby of some of us to "find the sweet spots".

"Trading" of resources between those who have GPUs and those who have CPUs, and want to do a particular type of work, is an interesting manifestation of a "barter" economy.

(Sorry. Sometimes I just need to write.)
.. but my problem is really the heat, and not the electricity. Philosophically speaking, if one could be able to get rid of the heat efficiently, he would be millionaire next day. It is so freaking easy to produce this heat, and so freaking hard to get rid of it. Anything we do, from cooking, running the computers, the cars engines, even the refrigerators, or scrubbing the floor, pressing the break pedal of the car, everything end up in a lot of heat, which sometime is useful, but most of the time we have to get rid of it and we can't...
You could try moving from the tropics to the sub-arctic.

From my POV and for much of the year, computation is an essentially free by-product of fan heaters.

It is no coincidence that a goodly number of large data centres are located in Iceland and Scandinavia.
Ok. Selling TF work for P-1 work!
I am smiling, but this is serious! hehe...
I am struggling to get 100 percentile on PrimeNet's P-1 lifetime top list, but my hardware is way more efficient in doing TF (lots of GPU power, all systems are CPU-bottle-necked, no, what I say bottle necked, they are CPU-strangled!). However, I avoided to do too much TF in the last time because I already am very comfortable in the 100%-ile top. I can allocate two gtx580 to TF on the LL front, which would mean ~~850 GHzD/D. By doing P-1 with the same cards, it would mean between 85 and 95 GHzD/D, so a "rate" of 8 to 1 is advantageous for me. If anybody has CPU power and do P-1 and send me the results (no newcomers! I don't trust them!) I will give back 8GHzD of TF for every 1 GHzD of P-1 you give me.

[Edit: I give you the results including factors found, and you can keep the factors you find by P-1, I don't mind.]
Computer name: c1
Only asking for a heads up if you happen to see that my P-1's return an abnormally large factor :P

(Just for future reference: would we still be able to use GPU72 for assignments? I just set to use PrimeNet since I was unsure)

If you have spare TF capacity, I can spare some P-1 power.

Ouch! Guys, guys, you are overwhelming me, it is not my birthday! (BTW, today's my daughter's b'day)...

I see 3 computers from Chris, plus 4 computers from kracker (how we do with the TF credit??) and one computer from clocker (how we do with TF credit??), which is quite enough for now.

Honestly, I didn't expect this reaction, I thought people will be reticent... But you guys are all wonderful! I may have to do TF till I will retire, and I don't like that perspective either

Edit: 3 (three) exponents cleared by "alien" computers producing credits for me: two by Chris's and one by Kracker's. One of Chris's computer found this 99 bits beauty: 417019918800247121109539678423

Yes, you can use the GPU72 proxy for assignments (UN: LaurV), but not the manual reservation page. If the latter is used LaurV would get the credit on Primenet, but not GPU72.

Are you sure you can't handle more? I'm serious.

I had planned on bringing three other R720s over to you today. And, as everyone knows, we could *really* use the TFing right now! You're sure you're not willing to bring another card or two over?

Oh, also, if you're holding back any TFing results until you get word from kracker and clocker as to how they want the TFing credit handled, please don't. Submit anything you've got; and if the others want the credits you guys can work out the methodology in the near future, and "balance the ledger" then.

Thanks LaurV, kracker and clocker. I'm afraid we're likely to start releasing some candidates at 64M and 65M TFed "only" to 73 later today, but at least this effort is going to help lessen the number.

Edit: Oh, and happy birthday to your daughter. Let me guess what you bought her... A GPU?

I haven't begun yet.

Do your TF to whatever Chris thinks best.

We're giving her all she can take, Captain! Currently, that is just over 900 GHz-d/d, if the cards run constantly. I have been meaning to put the GTX 460 into my partner's machine, but there are a couple of sub-projects involved. I'd like to replace the stock cooler on his i7-920 with the Hyper 212+ I have lying around. Then I'd be more comfortable running something on the CPU, as well, at least part time.

re: birthday- It's a good thing your offspring are virtual, Chris. I can just imagine, "OK, Honey. What would Daddy like for your birthday?"

kracker 2013-12-07 21:25

Just for the fun of it, I am going to slowly start to turn almost all my computer's to LaurV...

I don't hold anything back, it would be too complicate. You and Kracker said that you don't need the credit so I won't ask 2 times :P

Clocker didn't say yet, but OTOH, his computer didn't report anything yet.

My Misfit says I reported 888.8 (no joke! all eights!) gigs in the last 24 hours, and 1473.11 gigs totally since I started. We will "regulate" any accounts later, if any of you will change his mind, and want any credit :D. I may put a third card into this next week.
