FAQ GIMPS program changed its account ID to a S-series ID

Hi all,

I'm new to all this and have just set up three GIMPS accounts - 2 on my dual processor PC and 1 on my laptop.

Unfortuinately they have now all converted to Snnnnn UIDs for some reason? How can I get them all merged back onto one account.

FAQ on main site indicates this is a known problem but does not explain how to resolve.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Barry

Go to "Test" then "User Information".

Re-enter your information.

Make sure your 2 copies of Prime95 on your dualie are in separate folders.

Let us know if that fixes it.

I use the -Ax switch per the readme.txt file while running the Prime95 from the same directory. This will change the INI filenames to be file000x, so there isn't any duplication.

Cheers! :)

Thanks Paulie - already got the -A1 switch bit worked out.

Outlnder,

This is what happens when I try and change my Snnnnn back to my username:

Prime95 contact server to update information but then immediately bounces back ERROR 5: UserID/Password error.

Then on next scheduled server contact sneds updates to server via text messages and then says done communicating with server.

However, USERID is now reverted back to Snnnnn on my client.

???

Email George, something is definitely screwed up.

Who? How?

Sorry - I did say I was new to all this.

Thanks.

George is the guy who runs this project. You can e-mail him at woltman@alum.mit.edu to get most glitches fixed, assuming he doesn't respond here first.

There is one other possibility. The username you are using is already in use by someone else and obviously their password is different from what you chose and hence the error. Try changing your username to something else and see if that works.

Bingo! Prime95 has the annoying misfeature of assigning a new userid and password if the current userid/password combination is not valid. Rather than pop up an error box saying "that userid is taken" it blithely assigns a random one.

Why did we do this? If you are reporting a result, I thought it better to create a userid/password pair and get the result reported rather than possibly losing the result waiting for the user to create a valid userid. Some scheme of anonymous result reporting would have been better.

Brad Bernard at PrimeNet has now fixed my accounts - all is working fine.
