Curtisc has retaken #1 from GPUto72

As of 11PM GMT, curtisc led GPUto72 by a margin of ~1600 GHz-days over the last year, 2444609.460 to 2442994.855.

Combined, the two teams are contributing close to 5 million GHz-days (or 13.7 THz-years) annually, constituting just under one-fifth of GIMPS present annual throughput.

Rock on, both teams! :showoff:

13.7 THz-Years is an interesting number. It's a good way to demonstrate the throughput. Seems a bit low, though. I get some 22GHz from my 3570k and considerably more from my GTX 670. Looks like I represent maybe 0.1% of GIMPS.

TheMawn 2013-08-05 00:15

But yes gogogo GPU72 I absolutely love that initiative.

Congratulations

Congratulations to team curtisc.

Also, congratulations to the self-centered jerks who drove away a major piece of GPU72 crunching power. Without your persistent efforts this announcement would not have been necessary. :blahblah:

Well whatever the percentage, we all do our part, for me max it is ~320-350 GHz/days. :coffee:

@kladner: Indeed... I'm sure they are happy now...

Thanks for pointing that out -- I wouldn't have noticed otherwise.

But please do note the work-type break-down. We're complementary, not competing (except in this very simplified metric).

Exactly, and the work you guys do make the work that us LL'ers do more valuable by focusing attention on better quality candidates. So good on you. Now, when I win the $400 million powerball Wednesday Legion of Evil is coming for CurtisC. That crown will be mine, oh yes, it will be.

I must be too young... What is Kladner talking about?

Every GHz-second is valuable to the project. Always keep in mind that we ultimately have an infinite space (the realm of all prime exponents) to search. We therefore will literally always need more compute power.

Definitely, and also we should note the "leverage" factor of work performed by GPUto72, with respect to the amount of work those ~2.5 million GHz-days have saved, as well as the fact that much of the work, having been run on GPUs, did not cost nearly as much in wall time as would be typically expected.

In other words, GPUto72 has earned ~2.5 million GHz-days in the last year, without expending the typical wall time equivalent to ~2.5 million GHz-days, but while saving GIMPS much more than ~2.5 million GHz-days of computing. It's a Win-Win-Win!

Basically it stemmed from a notorious user and his even more notorious lack of content, and his constant vitriolic polemics and philippics directed toward Chalsall, GPUto72, and its bigger players.

I am sure you can glean more information from searching around the forum, or by PMing appropriate users.

I agree that it was a shame that the episode resulted in the loss of at least one big player, as but for this loss, curtisc would have been unlikely to catch GPUto72 in the standings so quickly.
