Error: Primenet error 1

I hope this isn't a really stupid question, but can someone help me with this error?

I signed up last night and I have not been able to connect.
All I get is that it is trying to connect to primenet then I get
ERROR: Primenet error 1
Then it directs me to the FAQ but i found nothing there that really helps me with a connection error.

Thanks in advance.

Go to: http://mersenne.org/ips/faq.html#wininet

It talks about primenet error 1. Seems to have to do with a potentially corrupt dll file.

Also, see this thread:

Hope this helps, it's all I could find.

What version of Prime95 are you running ?

What operating system are you running XP, 2000, ME, 98SE, 98, 95, NT ?

Internet Explorer at least version 4 needs to be on the machine for some of the support dll components for the connection to work.

The oldest OSes may not have the dll components installed.

I just upgraded my software,
but my computer says "Unable to load HttpNet.DLL" or
"Unable to load RpcNet.DLL" or Prime95 says "PrimeNet error 1"._ What should I do?

It's possible the DLL is corrupt in some way. _
Try unzipping a fresh copy of the file from the distribution zip file.

For Error 1:_ IE 4.0, IE 5.0, Win95 SR2, Win98 or WinNT
libraries are required for most machines to properly use the HTTP protocol for PrimeNet._
Some people have reported success with IE 3.0 equipped
computers, but I have not tested this.

This allows 3 options:
[Not an option anymore] (recommended) try the RPC protocol.

download and install MS Internet Explorer 5.0 (you don't need to use most of it, or not even the browser - if you prefer),
try downloading and installing the redistributable Internet software components packaged and licensed to us by Microsoft. The downloaded self-installing executables install the WinINET software layer and its supporting libraries, and make required
registry settings._ These components are included in later versions
of Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, as well as Internet Explorer 3.0, and FrontPage 98.

Warning: When installing these components, never replace a file on your computer with an older file!

Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, download and run WinTdist.exe (U.S. English version) [contains WININET.DLL, INLOADER.DLL, SCHANNEL.DLL]

Windows NT 3.51, download and run WinT351.exe (U.S. English version) [contains WININET.DLL, INLOADER.DLL]

It could also be a firewall isn't allowing prime95 to use the internet connection.

Are you able to access web pages at the same time that you get the error ?

Duck ina bunker 2004-01-02 15:53

I am running Xp and IE 6.0
I have re downloaded and unzipped a fresh file but to no avail.
I have tried both version 23.7 and 23.8.
I can surf and other normal activity while it will not connect.
I shut down my firewall in an attempt to correct it, but still nothing.

I am going to remove it and try again now.
Does anyone think my using a Satellite connection for internect access has anything to do with the problem?

Thanks so much for all the help so far..

Create a file called primenet.ini. Add the line "Debug=1" to it. Run prime95 and post the prime.log output.

Duck ina bunker 2004-01-02 23:22

Sorry, if you have the time could you walk me through that, I have no idea how to create an ini file, or how to add the line, or how to post the prime.log output.

I apologize for my noviceness, if it is to much trouble I understand.
Thanks

I believe what he wants is.
1 - click start
2 - click run
3 - type edit
4 - type in Debug=1 on the first line
5 - save the file as primenet.ini in the folder with prime95
6 - run prime95
7- open prime.log
8- copy and paste it to this forum

This is if your running windows

Another thing you can try is see if your Satellite connection has you using a proxy server.
1 - open internet explorer
2 - click on tools
3 - click on internet options
4 - click on connections
5 - click on lan settings
6 - let us know if any boxes are check also if use a proxy server is checked you need to copy down the proxy address..

Downloading this 'error 1' fix seems to resolve this most of the time: ftp://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v238.zip

kubus 2004-01-04 09:27

PrimeNet error 1 could happen if your internet provider is using transparent proxy.
