Large Sequence Project direction
It seems that we have come to the point of 4788 being too large. Should we extend 3408? Should we drop 4788? You decide.
If anyone has any more poll options I will add them(assuming I can). |
I voted to find a new sequence, and my eyes are on 3366. I worked it a bit last year in December, after Bill left it, but my machines are busy with other things (I still have it bookmarked). This sequence has all all qualities to be a good candidate: it has a small starter (smaller than 4788, or 3408), it is quite high (size 170), the next step is not difficult (C135), and it has no clear driver (2^3*3^3, it may get rid of the threes in few steps, or not), etc. It would be nice to work it a bit, at least until it gets a 5  if it doesn't get a DD.

ECM started on 3366 a couple hours ago, will finish 904 curves at B1=1m, B2=gmp-ecm default at approx. 8:15 a.m. CDT tommorrow (Tuesday) |
A word of caution about 3366.
There's no guarantee that you are not simply repeating already done work.
|

According to Christophe we don't have to drop 4788 while taking on a new sequence. 3408 is temporarily assigned to me incase we don't want to keep it. Other sequences are available (if 3408 is not wanted) but he didn't provide a list.
Edit: I found this link http://christophe.clavier.free.fr/Aliquot/site/clavier_table.html but it hasn't been updated in six months. |
I would say it would be nice to do a bit of 3366 until it looses the extra powers of 3. Once that has happened I think it would be much better to find a large(150+) sequence without a driver and continue that for a while.
I think it would be nice to possibly continue 4788 as we have so much history with it. If we have a team sieve that takes us 6 months+ because we aren't putting much effort into it then so be it. |
There seems to be interest in 3366. I'll ask Christophe if it is available and hopefully get an updated elf file.
Sequence 3408 is currently sieving the next composite. I/We can move this one a few steps while we get ready for 3366. As the temps fall (in the Northern Hemisphere) and people return from their holiday travels, there might be enough interest to take 4788 one more step. In fact, firejuggler PM me with a better poly. Do you think we have enough interest (and resources: yoyo & NFS@Home) to advance two sequences this fall/winter? Possibly so. |
Finally got a reply from Christophe after two emails. He said the owner of Seq 3366 has not been heard from in about a year even when he tried to contact that person. We can have it but he doesn't know the ECM status of c135. FactorDB is already up to date with his elf file, meaning I did not have to update it.
3366 currently stands at i2067 with 2^3 * 3^3 ... c135. I will move Seq 3408 a couple more indexes before releasing it back. (Others can help if they like,) 3408 currently stands at i1310 with 2 * 3^4 * 5 ... c150. ECM is progressing in another thread. |
That is mainly what I said in post #2 above. Good to have an official confirmation for it.

I think as long as we have any interest, let's keep the sequences we've touched, especially since they're all getting beyond the point where they're easy individual projects. (I'm particularly nostalgic about 4788 since we did hit so many milestones with it....) I'll start some ECM work on all of them, since I'm currently stalled on all mine while I wait for my current NFS job to finish. |
