What can one do on mersenne.org that is illegal?
What can one do on mersenne.org that is illegal?
Heh, guessing it's more along the lines of "misusing and/or abusing GIMPS/PrimeNet", of course.
IDK wat to do.
You could try writing proper English sentences.

The IP of Mr. "IDK wat to do" P brings some hits from google that make one wonder if "pranking" was worth the consequences:

Lastly, one doesn't simply vandalize our Ada's page!

What a friggin' spastic. Because it's really exciting to screw around with a project like GIMPS, where vandalism is detected in, gee, I don't know, about 5 minutes. Should really get you elite hacker status and a cheerleader girlfriend...NOT.

Looks like an extensive rap sheet on Wikipedia. Got his whole school banned from editing. [STRIKE]Maybe we should send[/STRIKE] I just sent an e-mail to the school district, as I am sure they would be delighted to know the antics that one of their star pupils gets up to with school IT property and a school IP address.

"IDK what to do" - yeah, I'm sure that's what your parents have made a habit of saying since the day of your birth, jackass. But, seriously, congratulations, I've never seen an account banned from GIMPS for "illegal activity". Between that and getting your entire school kicked off Wikipedia, you're truly in the glory days of your life. Enjoy, and keep those memories safe, so you'll have something to laugh about when you're the director of sanitation at a medical waste facility...or in jail for cyber crimes.

Godspeed, doofus, and stay the hell off GIMPS! Buh-bye now!

You know, I don't even know how you do that, unless you're pretty darn familiar with GIMPS in the first place. I wonder what he was doing...submitting fake residues? Typing rubbish into the manual results form?

To play the devil's advocate, it's possible (given what I know, anyway) that it was other people in his school that got the school banned from both Wikipedia and GIMPS, and he is simply caught in the crossfire: that another person in his school did "illegal" things to GIMPS, got the IP banned, and then by him logging in to his account through that IP (without doing anything wrong), it looked suspicious, and he got banned too.

Buut I wouldn't bet that's what happened.

The image says his account which was deactivated, not his IP blocked.

But when forum mods traced the IP address of Mr. "IDK what to do", they Googled that IP and found the Wikipedia activity, which includes multiple incidences of vandalism stretching back to at least last year (it attracted enough ire at Wikipedia that the IP in question is hard-banned for 14+ months). Wikipedia indicates that the IP address belongs to a school district in Conroe, Texas.

I agree that this could be the "work" of several students, but normally a concentrated campaign of this kind of behavior is generally the hallmark of one or two disgruntled students. Usually the fun of writing your name on a Wikipedia page dissolves pretty quickly after the first or second revert, unless you are, shall we say, "special". This moron has been doing this kind of thing for over a year on Wikipedia, and now he has taken the time to invade a highly specialized project such as GIMPS, where one would have to gather enough knowledge to even know *how* to "mess" with the system in the first place.

As I like to say, it's sad that parents aren't teaching their children shame anymore.

It's sad that most people in this forum are not willing to study the subject that they claim to be interested in.

Some people simply refuse to learn.

Sorry guys, I use a school computer to do allot of monitoring of my account. Someone found the page in the history on the school computer and must have done this. Not sure who it was, but I'll try and remove the site from the history and cache after I check my account (Fox_McCloud). But then again, I expected this from high school students -_-

Unregistered 2013-05-09 18:29

Also, I asked the guy who did it. He said he didn't even make an account, he just altered the text in the URL after I logged out. Apparently, you can put whatever you want there and it will show it.

This is basically what he did http://imgur.com/PQE2bSc

Sorry for the confusion he caused. It was sorta my bad for leaving the page up after I updated a computer's settings.

NBtarheel_33 2013-05-10 11:49

So, is your school participating in GIMPS?

fox_mccloud_123 2013-05-10 13:27

Yep, and I manage it. We use the computers that arn't otherwise used.

Do you have permission for this usage?

Account wasn't banned, he just altered the URL so the text would make it look like the account was banned. Then he took a screen shot and just posted it here for the kicks. No harm done on my end. He wasn't even on the account.
