To me it seems more likely "Why doesn't this PITA just go away?"
From my experience, "the squeaky wheel get's the grease". But, of course, because time is not free, one must factor in one's cost for each "squeak" taking into consideration the upside value of the desired outcome. |
Also, if you do want the money for your shipping, be sure and make it clearly known to them that you asked for a 570 back in the first place.
Unfortunately we cannot recall this package as it is beyond the US border. If you reject the package then we would need you to cover the return shipping.

Just heading to beddies, but a thought popped into my head about this issue (having a good memory can sometimes be a bad thing)... James, IANAL, but you might want to consider that they might be being a little deceitful in this language. Specifically they say "If you reject the package then we would need you to cover the return shipping." I could very well be wrong, but if a delivery person shows up at your door with a package asking you to sign for it, and you reject it as it wasn't what you agreed to have shipped, how could it possibly be your responsibility to pay for the return shipping? |

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0181-unordered-merchandise Q. Am I obligated to return or pay for merchandise I never ordered? A. No. If you receive merchandise that you didn’t order, you have a legal right to keep it as a free gift. So just appreciate the free gift they sent, and keep pestering them to send you a replacement card as they promised :) |
They didn't promise anything.
I have the GTX 660ti now, waiting for a "manager" to figure out how to send me the 570. |
From my experience, "the squeaky wheel get's the grease"
And in this case it seems that squeaking is getting some results:
I did review your case and have looked in to get you another graphics card similar to your original. I can offer a 3GB 580 with a cross-shipment in order to assist you with this. Please confirm your address and we will begin the process for the RMA.
Even if I have to pay the return shipping, I think that's a fair trade to get a 580 (433Ghd/d) instead of a 660ti (237Ghd/d).

Great news, James! I hope they follow through in good orderly fashion.
|
Sweet! That's very cool of them. I guess a GTX 580 is all they had on hand. The shipping cost of returning the 660 Ti (plus the other two shipping costs you incurred earlier) more or less pay for the upgrade.
|
Does anyone have mfakto benchmarks with the latest drivers? I hear some of the "slower" cards might see much better compute performance. A lot of references to folding. Not sure if they apply.
I guess a GTX 580 is all they had on hand.
Looking at more generalized gaming benchmarks, a GTX 580 and a GTX 660 Ti are pretty close to the same performance, in fact the GTX 660 Ti is still slightly faster (0%-20%) depending on benchmark, so from that perspective the 580/660 is a more-or-less equal trade. A gamer would still prefer the 660ti (and my gaming machine already has a 670). But for the performance we care about here, a 580 is 80% faster than the 660ti.

Bravo! Party!
And a green star sticker for the manufacturer, as they understood at least. I put them on the list of "to be considered when I buy more hardware" (which may be pretty soon!) |
