Noob Question
 

Hi, I overclocked my 3960x to 4,8Ghz on my Rampage IV Extreme.
After like 5 minutes after running prime95 my clock goes back to 3,3Ghz and stays like that without any erros.
Am I doing something wrong here?

Thermal throttling perhaps?

Well, im running on a single loop the cpu and 2 gtx590 with 2 triple radiators mcp655b pump, getting 80C, hyperthreading disable.
But prime95 doesnt run tets on the gpus. Any sugesstions?

80C on the CPU or GPU's? What is your cpu tempature when the clock goes down?

Im getting 80C on the cpu with core voltage on 1,400v

Knowing what you have does not mean it is setup correctly. Without data on temps and such we can't help too much.

I don't know when those chips reach thermal throttling, but 80C is definitely [I]high[/I].

80C for an Intel is fine; they've been known to go to 90C and higher and work fine (not that anyone would recommend or feel comfortable with that).

If 80C is the max temp at 4.x GHz, then it's not the problem. (If that's the temp at the default 3.3 GHz, then it certainly is thermal throttling.)

I don't see how a CPU could get to 80C with a functioning water cooling setup.

Sounds like your CPU waterblock isn't properly seated on the CPU. If your water temperature hardly changes with CPU load change, this is almost certainly the culprit. However, you could also have air in the lines, or other pumping problems that prevent the water in the block from proper flow.

If you have a 125W TDP hex core processor overclocked by 40%, there will be a [i]lot[/i] of heat. 80C at 4.8 GHz is perfectly reasonable.
