No, I'm asking about the new 690.
Oh, I see. Sorry. |
No, I'm asking about the new 690.
We read that there are only two partners making 690 cards, ASUS and EVGA. We also read that they are 100% reference designs, with not even stickers allowed. We usually buy ASUS, because they design things better, but EVGA has better support. Since the designs are identical it made sense to go with the company with better support.
Well, since the Titan seems like a bust for trial factoring (thus far) we decided, since we only have one "real" computer anymore that we use regularly (general purpose and gaming) that we would order a GTX 690. It should be here on Monday. We know that you all are probably thinking, "OMG, the ASUS whore bought EVGA!" But there is a method to our madness. Besides their top-tier support, check out this offer: http://www.evga.com/support/warranty/extended.asp Five years of warranty for $30 or 10 years (!) of warranty for $60.
PS - Titan or 690, you gotta get this: http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=1606940 |
I thought the GeForce 600 series was bad for compute?
I thought the GeForce 600 series was bad for compute?
If Newegg had a 590 in stock we would have bought that instead.

Yeah, it would seem that retailers generally stop selling older hardware after a while. This is unfortunate because the GeForce 400 and 500 series were the most efficient in terms of GHz-days. I think the major problem is that prime hunting is still a niche hobby; it may be an extremely long time before we see another architecture that happens to be optimized for GIMPS work.
You know, it would be awesome if some ultra-generous person commissioned someone to design an ASIC for GIMPS work. We can dream, right? |

When I bought and registered my 580 with EVGA two years ago, I got a lifetime warranty. Of course, who knows what they would send me if anything ever goes wrong since the 580 is no more... |

Are you using the stock fan? |
Hm... Shocking!!! Do we really have to use AGP?? |
When I bought and registered my 580 with EVGA two years ago, I got a lifetime warranty. Of course, who knows what they would send me if anything ever goes wrong since the 580 is no more...
Our guess:
If they could not repair it, you would get an "upgrade" to a 680. Maybe, if you were lucky, a refurb 580. It probably costs less to send out a new card than to diagnose and repair an old one. It would really be a problem if you ran SLI, since they have to match exactly. (Another bonus for the 590/690 since SLI is built-in.) |
Are you using the stock fan?
Yes. It runs pretty quiet.
We did not know there were other fans available. |
