Favorite Holiday Sweets
Since Christmas is coming up, I assume that many of you are either going to make or enjoy various holiday treats whether it be cutout cookies, peppermint, or whatever else. So I ask the question, what is your favorite sweet that you normally get only around this time of year?
I'll start: homemade chocolate covered caramels, rum balls, and buckeyes. I made the first two and my wife makes the buckeyes. |

Panettone e torrone! :-9

I am likely to make eggnog from scratch at some point. This is way too involved and time-consuming to do more often. The other sweets I make, like pies and cookies, are less seasonal.

Twice! It is a fiddly process, requiring various stages of prep, followed by rest periods before proceeding. Properly done it really takes work on two consecutive days. This, BTW, is following the gospel according to Joy of Cooking. One of my aunt/uncle pairs always hosted Xmas dinner. My uncle always made eggnog for the adults. One year, he used 150 proof Jamaican rum as the alcohol component. I was not of drinking age at the time, but quite a few grown-ups got very wobbly that year. |

I make caramels. I also make pecan pies throughout the fall. My favorite holiday sweets are ones that other people make and I eat. |

What a book, what a book! My mom gets many of her recipes from there. You can also sometimes find Pannetone in our house; my absolute favorite though, is banket a.k.a. boterletter. Fortunately for my family, my mom knows enough Nederlands to read Dutch cookbooks. (My Opa is Dutch; he was born in Rotterdam.) |

Cool! Thanks! |
My favorite holiday sweet is my baby niece. She's cute, smart and well-behaved, for a 4-year old anyway. Hell, she's well-behaved for a balding 38-year old with schizophrenia.
If my childhood is any indication, everything will fall apart when she turns 6.(I don't believe in that whole,"Don't say it or it's more likely to happen," stuff) |
