I want a P4 processor

According to the Computer Properties page I have:

Model....... Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz
Features.. 4 core, Prefetch,SSE,SSE2,SSE4,AVX
Speed...... 4.400 GHz (3.214 GHz P4 effective equivalent)

My details are correct but, if the Primenet P4's are that good, I want a P4.

Prime95 2012-11-10 15:43

I'm retiring two of my P4s this week. I'll be happy to swap motherboards with you.

Seriously, this will be fixed next time your computer sends a "CPU description" update.

kracker 2012-11-10 16:31

Hmm... bug?
Model Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz Features Dual core, Prefetch,SSE,SSE2 Speed 2.327 GHz (3.779 GHz P4 effective equivalent)

:loco::loco::loco:

Prime95 2012-11-10 19:04

Yes, bug. Primenet was not recognizing "i5" and "i7" in the CPU description and applying a reasonable multiplier. I also added a multiplier if AVX is among the supported CPU features.

A) Changed my mind, sorry

B) So what would trigger my computer to send a 'CPU description'? Changing my day/night times made no difference.

Antonio 2012-11-11 18:37

Sorted, now reports:-

Model....... Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz
Features.. 4 core, Prefetch,SSE,SSE2,SSE4,AVX
Speed...... 4.400 GHz (8.477GHz P4 effective equivalent)

Now thats more like it!

:big grin:

You could probably make a few bucks off of them, honestly. P4s still run $10-$25 on eBay. Probably more for 3.4 GHz variants. I actually had a difficult time finding a 3.2 GHz P4 for the old system that I recently rebuilt. These chips will likely have somewhat of a cult following for years among those who need only basic computing functions - office work, Web browsing, and the like. There are many old P4 systems that government and industry give away for free that folks can easily and cheaply restore.

They end up as donations for "poor" countries, or what the "rich" countries imagine is "poor" (in reality bigger lobby, bribery, relations, etc) and end being sold by local mafia for low bucks. I saw (literary) mountains of them in both Romania and Thailand, occasionally in the last 10 years. Here in Thailand they are marketed as "second hand computers" and sold for as low as 500-3000 baht (20-90 dollars, depending what's inside the box) in so called "computer shops" (in reality junk yards, in fact there is no "serious" computer shop in Chiang Mai, one may have to go to Bangkok for that). At this price they barely cover the transportation and I imagine they all come from donations for schools or poor hill tribe villages, whatever. Some still have labels from the original owner, I remember a CRT monitor with a yellow sticker on the corner, with a name of a company, department, name of the guy and his password. No joke  We used to make fun a long time about it, and we looked for monitors previously owned by FBI or CIA, with the username and password on them, but we did not find any . Periodically when they are too many, and become costly to store, they are put on the street and rolled over with a bulldozer.

Freecycling
There are many old P4 systems that government and industry give away for free that folks can easily and cheaply restore.
A good number of old systems are freecycled around here, and some of them are much less powerful than a P4. Earlier this year I freecycled a PIII-350 to guy in his 70's who wanted a basic machine for email and simple web browsing. It was more than adequate for his needs and because it was his first computer since early MS-DOG days he had no pre-conceptions about the suitability of Linux to run on it.

Earlier today I collected a freecycled wheelchair for SWMBO. A couple of weeks ago another freecycler gave me several kilograms of candlewax --- some still in the form of entirely acceptable candles, the rest partially burned or otherwise not usable as-is. One of my hobbies is making candles and acquiring the raw material for nothing is a big win.

It's amazing what can be found on freecycle. it's a great way of reducing landfill and of redistributing junk around the neighbourhood. What to the donor is superfluous clutter can be an amazing resource to the recipient. My sillyscope, for instance, was freecycled, as is a HeNe laser and a IBM StinkPad laptop. I've disposed of a set of encyclopedias, a microscope and had a bunch of people prune my bay tree for me in return for the leaves. Each of them went away with bay leaves which would have cost them at least £20 if they were to purchase them in a supermarket. Two also left with self-sown seedlings from my tree so that they could grow their own herbs in future years.

If you're not already an active freecycler I heartily recommend that you get involved.

Good suggestion - I've been wondering what to do with a still-perfectly-functional 10-year-old 700MHz Celeron notebook which was the emergency backup for my Thinkpad until I bought a macbook 3 years ago.

SWMBO = Single White Male Brothel Operator?

(I got that, but Paul has a sufficiently wide sense of humor that I thought I'd check)

Just signed up for the Cupertino FreeCycle group and posted an Offer of the Celeron laptop. Their user rules has one interesting item:

6. NO OFFERING YOURSELF OR YOUR CHILDREN. Posting oneself or another person from the human species is not allowed. There are many fine Internet dating sites better suited to this purpose.

You doubt it? I'll let you do the search, I daren't.

The infamous "rule 34" encompasses this... and more!

ewmayer 2012-11-20 18:52

Celeron notebook successfully placed, single mom got it for her 12-year-old son. I noted to them that finding Win2000-compatible software might be nontrivial, but that there are surely online swap-meet sites dealing in that sort of thing. (Not sure if those are the same ones where one can trade children for cigarettes.)

NBtarheel_33 2012-11-20 19:15

I have an XP OEM install disk and the whole set of MS Works 2002 software with product key. Would that be of use to them? I would be willing to part with the lot for some help on the postage.

I think that is a little low, my i5-2450M says:

What is the rolling average (from local.txt)?

alpertron 2012-11-21 12:33

I do not have access to the computer now. But Primenet says:

Software Version Windows64,Prime95,v26.6,build 3
Model Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50GHz
Features 4 core, Prefetch,SSE,SSE2,SSE4
Speed 2.508 GHz (0.264 GHz P4 effective equivalent)
L1/L2 Cache 32 / 3072 KB
GHz-days credited 178.392 GHz-days (in the last 365 days)
Work units completed 2411 (in the last 365 days)
Work units assigned 45
CPU rolling average 66 / 1000 ( 7%) Execution priority 1 (default)
Benchmarks 2 recorded, most recent 2012-03-25 02:27

This month the computer was running maybe 1 hour a day because the temperatures are rising in the southern hemisphere and the processor runs at 80 °C when using all cores.

This explains everything. Your rolling average is way below 1000 because it is only running one hour a day. As your rolling average goes down so does your P4 equivalent speed.

Note: At your current P4 equivalent speed, the CPU will be assigned TF or ECM work. You may want to force a specific work type if the computer will resume 24 hour a day operations.

alpertron 2012-11-21 16:33

I've always run ECM on low exponents (less than 1 million) in that computer, so I have no problems for the low performance.
