Retiring my GPU
 

I've had a good run here since the start of the GPU72 project — stayed in position #7 for quite a while and now comfortably in #10. I'm going to take a break from the heat and fan noise of the GPU and go CPU only.

I plan on continuing to get my assignments from the project and I will run 2 LL threads, 2 DC and one P-1 (keeping one thread free for me); I'll finish up my queued TF work in a week.

Thanks for letting us know Chuck, and for all the cycles you've contributed. You often took the less desirable "last level" work which needed to be done, but cost twice as much per factor found.

Also, you were the one who suggested we form a "GPU72 Team" on Primenet where we're now #1 overall, #1 for TF, #1 for P-1, and #2 for LL-D (over the last year) -- I never would have thought of forming a team.

Unfortunately, we've lost a lot of fire-power recently. First Xyzzy, then Craig, now you. I perfectly understand, of course -- it can be very expensive to do what many of us do. The good news is we're about 30 days ahead of the LL wave for TFing, and still have enough cycles to continue to maintain the lead.

Yes, those who heat their homes with electricity, or use electric space heaters, might as well use GPUs to do so.

Craig is in Australia. He's now entering the summer. It would be silly for him to air-condition GPUs.

Myself, being 13.2 degrees above the equator, I don't really experience the seasons. But, strangely, I find myself rather cold in the evenings. It can drop as low as 18 degrees centigrade!

-40 degrees is a good yardstick in either metric!

Yep, been there, done that. Those were the days... The school was out if it was below -35. I once walked to school only to see it closed (the thermometer was a bit off, or maybe we didn't check the radio? don't remember).

Yes, I do recall you've said that -- I would mind less than most people, seeing as I manage -5 - -10 C just fine in shorts (if there's no wind).

My talent is working outdoors in 35-40 C weather, in Gulf Coast humidity.

EDIT: I don't look forward to the Midwest winter. At least it helps me justify converting 690 Watts into heat via my computer.
