I was yelling at the radio with NPR. They had a smooth-talking Spook Monster (former Deputy so and so of the CIA) blandly lying out his rear about "just a few violations, which we reported." Repeatedly cited the Dept of Injustice under George W, saying that everything was legal, "even if we made some Al Qaeda guys uncomfortable, it gave real results!" Not even John McCain agrees.

Of course, those "legal" opinions were the Tortured output of John Yoo, Jay Bybee, and other Lawyer Monsters.

Any members of this forum considering working for any of the agencies involved or their subcontractors (a distinct possibility if you are a number theorist) should think carefully about the issues raised in this report.

And of course the (so-called) justice department has decided NOT to prosecute any of the CIA officials
who perpetrated these crimes, nor any of the higher ups [e.g. Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Rice] for authorizing
this violation of the Geneva Conventions.

I am hoping that international courts will have the courage to do something.

Of course, as the Land of the Free refuses to have anything to do with the ICHR (for example), nothing will come of it anyway.

On the "enablers" front:

Report slams psychologists who devised Bush-era interrogation | Reuters

"Why can't you leave me alone?" Mitchell, who has retired to Florida, asked a Reuters reporter when contacted by telephone on Tuesday.

Um, because you're walking around a free man?

And a good comment spotted on the web:
The thing that strikes me about all the torture is that it was part of the USA’s hysterical reaction to 9/11. That was a success for a daring, and lucky, terrorist group, but it did not remotely endanger the existence of the USA, and would probably prove very hard to repeat. So instead of coolly assessing what to do next, your government and nation had a fit of the vapours, and then started lashing out against the innocent and guilty alike. No; that’s wrong – mainly against the innocent; producing mountains of dead in Iraq, for instance, who had nothing whatever to do with 9/11. Really, the American reaction was appallingly stupid and wicked. After the passage of years, and the exit from office of W, one might hope for better. It’s not obvious that “better” has occurred: O seems to be just another odious fellow.
And recently the USA seems to have decided to try to restart the Cold War. Dear God, is there to be no end to the folly?
Perhaps the 2 worst things about the global torture program are:

[1] Bad as it is, the report is still heavily redacted, meaning that the stuff that didn't make the public release is even worse than what was revealed (or better, confirmed);

[2] 54 countries participated in the rendition and black-site program, including many which make a frequent show of vilifying "rogue states" and "thug regimes" for their lack of respect for human rights and international law.
